Application of Constructed Wetlands for Treatment of Wastewater from Fruit and Vegetable Industry

About 2000 plants are involved in fruit and vegetable processing in Poland, they are mostly located in non-urbanized areas and without any access to sewerage and sewage treatment facilities. In 2014, they produced more than 10 hm3 of wastewater requiring treatment, which was discharged directly into surface waters or into the ground. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of the constructed wetland for treating the sewage from fruit and vegetable industry. The analyzed constructed wetland with vertical flow reveled a reduction in the value of BOD5 to 68.2%, and CODCr to 79.3%. The model was characterized by 60.2% efficiency of total phosphorus removal.

Celem pracy była charakterystyka składu ścieków surowych z zakładu w województwie podlaskim produkującego soki owocowo-warzywne oraz mrożonki. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono, że ścieki z przemysłu owocowo-warzywnego zawierają duże ilości substancji organicznej wyrażonej w BZT5 (od 900 mg O2/dm3 do 2200 mg O2/dm3) oraz ChZT (od 1320 mg O2/dm3 do 2316 mg O2/dm3) a ubogie są w azot i fosfor. Najwyższe ładunki związków organicznych przypadają na miesiące: sierpień i wrzesień, zaś najniższe na marzec oraz maj.

The aim of the study was to characterize the raw wastewaters with fruit and vegetable industry (vegetable fruit juices and frozen food) in Podlaskie. Based on the survey, it was found that raw wastewater in the fruit and vegetable industry contain large amounts of organic compound expressed in BOD (900 mg 2/dm3 to 2200 mg O2/dm3) and COD (1320 mg O2/dm3 to 2316 mg O2/dm3) and low in nitrogen and phosphorus. The highest values of organic compounds are of the August and September and the lowest in March and May.

Sektor mrożonek owocowych i warzywnych, obok sektora soków i napojów pitnych, należy do najbardziej perspektywicznych działów polskiego przetwórstwa owocowo-warzywnego. Przewiduje się, że utrzyma się, zarysowana w latach 90., tendencja wzrostu produkcji i eksportu mrożonek owocowo-warzywnych. Zapotrzebowanie na te produkty w krajach Europy Zachodniej wykazuje stały wzrost. Liczyć się należy, że integracja z UE zwiększy możliwość lokowania polskich mrożonek na rynku rozszerzonej Wspólnoty, zwiększy się również zapotrzebowanie na mrożonki na rynku krajowym. Aby jednak sprostać zwiększonemu zapotrzebowaniu, niezbędna jest koncentracja we wszystkich ogniwach tego sektora.

Apart from sector of juices and soft-drinks, sector of frozen fruit and vegetable mixtures belongs to the most perspective branches of Polish fruit and vegetable processing industry. It is anticipated that the tendency of growth of production and export of frozen fruit and vegetable mixtures, as observed in the nineties, will maintain. The demand for these products in West European countries shows a permanent increase. It should be expected that integration with the European Union will increase the possibilities to put Polish frozen products on the market of the expanded Community; also, the demand for chilled fruits and vegetables on domestic market also will increase. To satisfy the increased demand, the concentration in all links of this sector is necessary.
