The role of flotation frothing agents in the flotation process is generally known, especially due to the size of bubbles and the stability of the foam formed. In recent years, a number of new reagents have been introduced. The purpose of this article is to present a comprehensive database containing the characteristics of surfactant families discussed using the parameter of the so called the Critical Coalescence Concentration (CCC). This article presents an analysis of the experimental data set by the author and the experimental data published in the literature.

Determination of the flotation kinetic is crucial for optimization, simulation, and plant design for flotation processes. Even though there are many studies carried out to clarify the kinetic properties of the conventional flotation cells, there is not enough detailed study about the Jameson cell which is used more than 300 plants but no application in Turkey yet. One of the most important parameters affects the kinetic of flotation is a frother. The effects of common frothers on the kinetic of Jameson cell can be crucial due to the possible further application of the cell in European and Turkish flotation industries. The present study was performed out to reveal the kinetic properties of the Jameson cell by using both pure quartz and coal particles. Besides, the effects of three different types of frothers on the kinetic of the Jameson cell were investigated for various particles sizes. According to the results, aliphatic alcohol type frother (MIBC) provided higher recovery for fine particles, while polypropylene glycol type frother (AF65) gave a better ability to float medium and coarse size particles. Additionally, the results show that the Jameson cell was four times faster than the mechanical cell for medium size while the ratio was three times for coarse particles. Lastly AF65 can be used for flotation of coarse particles in the Jameson cell while MIBC can be preferred for fines.

The paper presents the yield of carbon-and-cooper-bearing shale from the Legnica and Glogow Copper Basin flotation also called Kupferschiefer in the presence of ethylene, diethylene and trithylene glycol butyl ethers (C4E1, C4E2, C4E3) frothers characterized by frother normalized concentration that is ratio of the frother concentration, and its critical coalescence concentration expressed in different units. It was found that the oucome of flotation is identical provided that the frother concentration is expressed in milimoles per Mg.

Over the past 20 years quantitative measures of frother functions have been developed to try to replace such qualitative descriptors as “weak” and “strong”. One of these metrics is the critical coalescence concentration (CCC) that quantifies a frother’s ability to reduce bubble size; another is the concentration at minimum velocity (CMV) that quantifies a frother’s ability to reduce bubble rise velocity. The experimental procedure for the two measures is briefly outlined and the measures are shown to be related. Using CMV, based on more than 50 surfactants from the two main frother families, alcohols and polyglycols, the frother structure-property-function link is investigated. The structure variables were: in alcohols, alkyl chain length, and position of the methyl branch and hydroxyl group(s); and in polyglycols, alkyl chain length, and number of propylene oxide (PO) or ethylene oxide (EO) groups. On the argument that low CMV represents the desired outcome, the main findings are: the dominant effect of alkyl chain length in both alcohols and polyglycols; that for alcohols branched-chain isomers are superior to straight chain, with the best combination being OH at the terminus and the methyl branch as far away as possible; and for polyglycols, PO-based are superior to EO-based. Interpretation of these observations included the effect of structure on the following properties: surface activity, mass transfer rate, H-bonding, and molecule packing.

Odczynniki pianotwórcze dobierane są w praktyce zgodnie z ogólnymi zasadami i sprawdzane w testach laboratoryjnych oraz przemysłowych. Powszechnie stosowane w odniesieniu do nich terminy "silny" lub "selektywny " są raczej intuicyjne niż ściśle naukowe. W związku z tym podjęty został program badawczy mający na celu zbadanie podstawowych właściwości odczynników pianotwórczych stosowanych we flotacji oraz standaryzowanie testów pozwalających uzyskać dane potrzebne do ich scharakteryzowania i klasyfikacji. Ponieważ odczynniki pianotwórcze służą do zmniejszenia wielkości pęcherzyków oraz zwiększenia stabilności piany, to w procedurach przyjętych w niniejszym artykule były one charakteryzowane przez ich zdolność do zmniejszania wielkości pęcherzyków oraz zwiększania stabilności piany. Wykazano, że opracowany system klasyfikacji odczynników pianotwórczych oparty na tych dwóch parametrach pozwala na prawidłowe rozróżnienie odczynników uważanych za "selektywne" i tych, które uważa się za "silne".

In practice, frothers are selected following general guidelines and verification by laboratory and/or plant tests. The terms "powerful" or "selective", which are commonly used to characterise frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning. A research program has been set out to study fundamental properties of the flotation frothers and to identify the tests, which can provide information needed to characterise and classify such flotation agents. Since flotation frothers are used to reduce bubble size and increase froth stability, in the procedures adopted in this paper they were characterised by their ability to reduce bubble size in a flotation cell and to increase foam stability. It has been shown that the developed frother classification system based on these two measurements is able to correctly distinguish the frothers known as being selective from those which are known to be powerful.
