The presented work discusses the influence of material of foundry mould on the effect of modification of AlSi11 alloy. For this purpose castings were produced in moulds made of four various materials. Castings of the first type were cast in a metal die, the second ones in the conventional mould of bentonite-bound sand, those of the third type in the sand mould with oil binder, the last ones in a shell mould where phenol-formaldehyde resin was applied as a binder. All the castings were made of AlSi11 alloy modified with strontium. For a purpose of comparison also castings made of the non-modified alloy were produced. The castings were examined with regard to their microstructures. The performed investigations point out that the addition of strontium master alloy results in refining of the alloy structure, particularly of the \alfa-phase, causes some morphological changes in the alloy and the refinement of eutectics. The advantageous influence of modifier on the structure of the examined silumin was observed particularly in the case of alloy cast either in the conventional oil-bound sand mould or in the shell mould. The non-modified alloy cast into a metal die exhibits a structure similar to those of modified alloy solidifying in the other moulds. The improvement in both tensile strength and unit elongation suggests that the modification was carried out correctly. The best mechanical properties were found for the alloy cast in a metal die, both with and without modification treatment.

Content available remote Signalling a foundry mould filling degree with infrared sensors

A contactless method of measuring a foundry mould filling degree in course of its pouring with liquid metal is suggested. The concept is based on infrared radiation of molten metal appearing in venting and flow-off holes. As the detector, an infrared channel receiving diode is applied. Three solutions were tested. In the first solution, the diode is placed at the calculated distance from the radiation source, in a housing that suppresses the scattered signal. The housing contains the electronics, while power supply and control signals are delivered by conductors. A diode actuation threshold is established in order to obtain high resolution and repeatability of the results. On the output, a miniature relay transmits the signal to the control system. In the second solution, the measuring system is supplied with a battery and the signal in transmitted through a plastic optical fibre. In the third solution, the optical fibre serves as an energy carrier. The optical system focuses the infrared radiation and introduces the energy to the optical fibre. On the other end of the fibre, a phototransistor amplifies the signal, forms it and transmits to the control system. Some experiments were carried out. Their results permitted noting disadvantages and advantages of individual solutions. It was evidenced that the measurement results obtained using the infrared radiation are independent on a constructional design. The solutions utilising optical fibres proved to be more useful in industrial conditions. Targets and further directions of research works using transceivers for wireless data transmission are presented.

Przedstawiono wstępne rezultaty badań zabiegu wermikularyzowania żeliwa zachodzącego w formie odlewniczej w komorach specjalnej konstrukcji przy równoczesnej filtracji i modyfikacji. Wykonano odlewy w formie wałków i schodków. Badano podstawowe właściwości żeliwa ferrytycznego i perlitycznego w aspekcie wpływu grubości ścianki na formę wydzieleń grafitu. Obserwowano proces pod względem uzysku magnezu i warunków ekologicznych.

The preliminary results concerning the investigations of the process of cast iron vermicularization, which takes place in a foundry mould in specially designed chambers with the simultaneous inoculation have been presented. Stepped or cylindrical castings have been made. A relationship between the basic properties of ferritic or pearlitic cast irons and the structure in terms of the wall thickness effect on the shape of the graphite precipitates has been tested.

Dla polskich siluminów technicznych płynących w metalowych kanałach o średnicy 12, 14, 16 mm określono temperaturę lejności zerowej. Temperatura formy wynosiła 150º C. Czynnikiem zmiennym była temperatura i prędkość zalewania.

For polish silumins flowing in metal channels of 12, 14, 16 diameter the zero-fluidity temperature has been determined. The mould temperature was about 150 ºC. The metal flow was realized by various pouring parameters.

The process of mould production has always been one of the major concerns of foundry practice stimulating the development of its comprehensive mechanisation. The history of moulding machines presented here seems to confirm this statement. In the middle of the 18th century a dramatically growing production of castings resulted in first attempts to mechanise mould production processes which were considered time consuming and demanded high qualification and experience. First hand-operated moulding machines equipped with a pattern plate (which could be able to compact only half of the mould) have appeared. This was only the beginning of hand-operated moulding machines and their industrial application. Their further development depended on the increasing demand for castings as well as on their high quality requirements. Moulding machine development was connected with the growth in efficiency and resulted in mass production provided that all other unit operations of casting production were rationalised. This leads to mechanisation and then to partially automation of casting processes. Nowadays, almost perfect and highly efficient automatic moulding machines still determine casting production efficiency and further development of mechanisation and automation of casting processes.
