Analysis of main propulsion engine seating in ship power plants

In the circumstances of information gap from the manufacturer of engines mounted in ship power plants about the tension of foundation bolts resulting from normal engine work in ship operation, the author resolved to check on ships constructed in Poland how the applied pre-tensions of foundation bolts relate to different parameters of engines. On the basis of research and control calculations of the seating of main propulsion engine series MAN B&W type L35MC on foundations it was shown that the number and tension of foundation bolts are directly proportional to the weight of seated engine.

Fundamenty stanowią istotną część w kosztach konstrukcji każdego obiektu. Stąd też staranność w ich obliczaniu i konstruowaniu powinna być odpowiednio duża. Niestety, nie zawsze tak się dzieje, częściowo z braku świadomości wpływu różnego rodzaju założeń. Artykuł poświęcony jest skutkom przyjmowanych założeń w trakcie obliczania fundamentów ograniczając się do fundamentów płytowych.

Foundations constitute a crucial part of construction costs. Therefore, establishing their detailed amount and usage should be analysed thoroughly. The rule, however, is often not applied due to not taking into consideration a number of factors which can strongly influence the construction process.This paper describes the possible results of various assumptions madę at the planning stage, concerning the foundation plates. For the clarity of the argument, it has been assumed, that in the exemplary construction the forces affecting the foundation are not prone to its movements.
