In this study, the effect of residue types (soundwood, branchwood and bark) on the quality properties of particleboards made from the tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle) was investigated. For this purpose, the soundwood, branchwood and bark mixed at different ratios were used in the production of particleboards. Modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), internal bond strength (IB), thickness swelling (TS) and formaldehyde emission (FE) of the specimens were then tested. The chemical and anatomical properties of the residue types were also determined. Residue type was found to have an impact on the properties of particleboards. The addition of bark and branchwood improved the thickness swelling (2 h immersion) and formaldehyde emission. However, use of branchwood negatively affected the thickness swelling for 24 h immersion. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that different parts of Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle can be used to manufacture particleboard panels. The branchwood and bark contents significantly affected the quality properties of the manufactured particleboards. The chemical and anatomical properties of the branchwood and bark were also found to be parameters influencing the quality properties of the particleboards. The results indicate that the contents of added bark and branchwood should not exceed 10% and 20% respectively.

The influence of selected material and technological solutions on the emissions of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOC) from multi-layer flooring elements with top layer made of oak wood was investigated. The adhesives on the basis of urea-formaldehyde resins were used. Experiments were performed for flooring boards prepared in both laboratory and industrial conditions. In terms of formaldehyde emission, the importance of the amount of adhesive used resulting from the number of wood layers was confirmed. In terms of volatile organic compounds emissions, the key role of surface finishing of final products was indicated.

The article presents the results of research on the influence of selected technological parameters, changed within a range similar to values presently used in industry, on the properties of three-layer particleboards produced from pine particles obtained from sawmill waste. The particles were glued with amine resins. The panels, produced using urea-formaldehyde resin modified with melamine, were characterised by the lowest content of formaldehyde, i.e. below 2 mg/100 g of ovendry board, after conversion into a value corresponding to the moisture content of the panels equalling 6.5%. The emissions of formaldehyde determined by the chamber and gas analysis methods were much lower than the threshold values recommended in international regulations and used as a basis for the classification of particleboards.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań wpływu wybranych parametrów technologicznych, zmienianych w przedziale zbliżonym do wartości aktualnie stosowanych w przemyśle, na właściwości trzywarstwowych płyt wiórowych wytwarzanych z wiórów sosnowych pozyskanych z odpadów tartacznych. Do zaklejania wiórów stosowano żywice aminowe. Najmniejszą zawartością formaldehydu, poniżej 2 mg/100g zupełnie suchej płyty, po przeliczeniu na wartość odpowiadającą wilgotności płyt – 6,5%, charakteryzowały się płyty wytworzone z żywicą mocznikowo-formaldehydową modyfikowaną melaminą. Emisja formaldehydu badana metoda komorową i analizy gazowej była znacznie mniejsza od wartości granicznych, obowiązujących i proponowanych w przepisach międzynarodowych, jako podstawa klasyfikacji płyt wiórowych.

Influence of electromagnetic treatment of the mineral filler on properties of the adhesive compositions for plywood production. The influence of pre-activation of natural mineral filler zeolite (clinoptilolite) in the electromagnetic microwave field (EMF) and in a weak pulsed magnetic field (IMP) on the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of adhesive compositions were investigated. The differences in the mechanisms of exposure of EMF and IMP on mineral filler in adhesive composition were identified. Decrease of free formaldehyde content from cured adhesive composition is 23 %. Increase of acidity and reduction of gel time were determined. Addition of clinoptilolite into the adhesive composition increases the strength of the adhesive layer: at untreated sample by 6 %, treated in a weak IMP by 14 % and activated in EMF by 23 %.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki wybranych wariantów badań przeprowadzonych w ramach pracy doktorskiej. Celem jej było zbadanie wpływu modyfikacji impregnacyjnej żywicy mocznikowo-formaldehydowej za pomocą żywic akrylowych, zawierających w łańcuchu bocznym takie grupy funkcyjne jak: grupa karboksylowa, grupa amidowa, grupa estrowa i grupa cyjanowa na właściwości płynnych i utwardzonych mieszanin impregnacyjnych oraz wytworzonych z ich użyciem sztucznych oklein na nośniku papierowym.

This paper presents results of a range of experiments conducted within the scope of a doctoral thesis under the same title. The aim of the thesis was to study the effect of modification of impregnating urea-formaldehyde resin (UF resin) (by using acrylic resins with a side chain including such functional groups as carboxylic, amide, ester and cyano groups) on the properties of liquid and hardened impregnation mixtures, and on properties of paper foils made of those mixtures. The focus of the thesis was the following: (1) to study the properties of liquid impregnating mixtures of UF resin and different acrylic resins depending on the type and amount of the acrylic polymer used, (2) to study the properties of hardened impregnation mixtures of UF resin with some acrylic ones depending on the type of acrylic polymer, (3) to develop paper foils using selected impregnation mixtures, and (4) to study the properties of the obtained paper foils.
