The aim of this paper was the application of a new dynamic-passive method of treatment in correction of hallux valgus and coexisting static deformities of the foot (transverse-plane and plano-valgus foot). Methods: The study involved 50 patients; 26 with full big toe correction after the passive correction grip (group I) and 24 with big toe correction requiring additional passive abduction (group II). The patients regularly performed exercises using the designed device according to the planned schedule. The progress of the correction was assessed by a medical examination and additional tests. Results: The cross-sectional area [cm2 ] of the abductor hallucis muscle in three-time points among I and II groups of patients with the hallux valgus was measured based on MRI images. The STIR examination showed, among others, the abductor hallucis muscle edema after exercises with the DPc device were carried out. It evidences that exercises with the new device activate the muscle. Alignment of the big toes of both feet in groups I and II were obtained with a statistically significant result ( p < 0.05). The percentage progression of correction for HV and I/II IM was calculated. Conclusions: Based on the new correction approach the alignment of the big toe phalanges and the remaining toes was obtained. The passive setup of the tendons with their distal inserts at the level of the big toe phalanges to the correct path of their course with the withdrawal of articular subluxations was obtained. Simultaneously, the big toe's passive correction was dynamically consolidated through a specially selected set of exercises.

The study aimed to analyze the footwear fitting and its impact on foot construction features in primary schoolgirls. Methods: The study group was comprised of 100 girls aged 9 years. The study relied on the CQ-ST podoscope and the Clevermess device for pertinent measurements. The data were analyzed based on the Mann–Whitney U-test, multiple regression analysis and simple regression. Results: Too short right footwear had 37% of the girls and the left – 38% of the girls, while too long shoes were worn respectively by: 14% of the girls and 15% of the girls. Too wide footwear in relation to the right foot width had 45% of the group and in relation to the left foot: 41% of the group. Too narrow right shoes had 23% of the group and the left – 32% of the group. Statistically significant influence of the excess of outdoor footwear width was found on the Clarke’s angle values ( p = 0.041), the fifth toe setting of the right foot ( p = 0.015) and Wejsflog index of the left foot ( p = 0.036). Conclusions: Most 9-year-old girls wear poorly fitted outdoor footwear. Appropriately selected footwear in terms of the width facilitates the formation of foot architecture, but wearing too wide footwear increases the risk of hollow feet and the varus deformity of the fifth toe.

Nowadays, fashion has caused that many young women are wearing high-heeled shoes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of long-term walking in high-heeled shoes on the foot mechanics during barefoot gait. Methods: Forty-three young women (22 ± 2.1 years) divided into two groups participated in this retrospective cohort study. The first group was composed of women who frequently wear high-heeled footwear. The second, infrequent wearers group, consisted of women who preferred flat-heeled shoes. Measurements of gait parameters were recorded for barefoot gait. A motion analysis system and two force plates were used in order to evaluate the lower-limb rocker mechanism, transverse foot arch height and parameters of ground reaction force. Results: Walking in high-heeled shoes modified barefoot foot mechanics, which manifested itself in a shorter duration (by ca. 4%) of the first and second rocker and a significantly longer duration (by 5%) of the third rocker phase as well as a substantial reduction in height of the transverse foot arch (by around 50%) in women habitually walking in high-heeled shoes. A significantly shorter relative duration of the third rocker (44.3% of cycle time) and greater value of the vertical component of ground reaction force (114.7% BW) in the third rocker phase were found in the group of women habitually walking in high-heeled shoes. Conclusions: The mechanism of foot rolling, with flattened foot arch, and significantly higher values of the vertical component of ground reaction force and shorter time might lead to overload in lowerlimb joints in young women.
