Our Earth has been entangled in different adverse effects resulting from the excessive human interference into the territory of nature. The habit of extracting and consuming indiscriminately is moving them to a situation, where their own future generation would not be able receive benefits of the natural resources. It has also been recognized that human action is perhaps the most significant contributor to this. And therefore, a proper equilibrium, i.e., sustainable development, could only be achieved by bringing about a change in human behavior in general. We explore the possibility of using indigenous knowledge for encouraging sustainable behaviors. We propose a model for behavior change through storytelling by using folktales. We argue that folktales serve three functions – epistemic, motivational, and ethical – which make them potent tools for promoting sustainable behavior. We conclude by pointing out limitations and suggestion for future research.

Podlasie jest przykładem polskiego regionu pogranicza. Przez wiele stuleci poddawane było silnym oddziaływaniom kulturowym, społecznym, politycznym i ekonomicznym płynącym ze współistnienia żyjącej tu ludności: plemion Jaćwingów, ludności żydowskiej, tatarskiej, białoruskiej, ukraińskiej i litewskiej. Te historyczne uwarunkowania nie mogły pozostać bez wpływu na obecny kształt i charakter Podlasia. Pomocne w analizach takich stosunków okazują się opowieści ludowe  legendy, podania, klechdy, baśnie. W artykule dokonałam analizy około dwustu opowieści ludowych w kontekście: „ my”  „oni”, „swoi” „inni, obcy”. Podjęłam próbę odpowiedzi na następujące pytania: Jak dalece wyobrażenia jednych ludów oddziaływały na drugich? Jak dalece ta literatura sprzyja refleksji nad własną historią? W jaki sposób sprzyja ona empatii, solidarności, otwieraniu się na inne kultury? Wyróżniłam następujące pogranicza kulturowe w opowieściach ludowych Podlasia: pogranicze religijne, pogranicze etniczno-narodowe, pogranicze językowe.

Podlaskie Province it is an example of cultural borderline. Contrary to most of Poland which is homogenous in terms of ethnicity and religion, the North Eastern Region of Poland has several minorities. For many centuries Jacwing`s tribes, Jews, Tartars, Byelorussians, Ukrainians, Lithuanians had lived there, so their cultural, social, political and economical influences have remained there. In analyzing such relations, legends and other folk stories are very useful. From time immemorial, legends, fairy tales, stories, were handed down from generation to generation. Legends, fairy tales and stories connected with a region fulfilled particular role to build bonds with this region and its tradition. They talked about specificity of culture of a small part of the country and, at the same time, communicated integration of the particular community with the whole country.
