This article addresses the southern sector of the Curonian Spit, the largest coastal barrier of the Baltic Sea. A comparative analysis of the deposits that make up parts of the Curonian and Vistula Spits is given. The detailed analysis of the geological and geomorphological structure of the southern part of the Curonian Spit suggests that, within this sector, it is not a sedimentary barrier created by wave action and Aeolian processes in the Holocene, but a part of a pre-Holocene fluvioglacial plain. Field work has shown that the ancient alluvial or fluvioglacial plain is in the lagoon shore of the Vistula Spit.

Praca zawiera charakterystykę sedymentologiczną osadów sandrowych występujących pod niewielkiej miąższości gliną lodowcową w południowo-wschodniej części Wysoczyzny Ciechanowskiej, w pobliżu strefy krawędziowej z doliną Narwi. W artykule przedstawiono opis sekwencji struktur sedymentacyjnych widocznych w żwirowni Łubienica-Superunki i próbę interpretacji warunków transportu i depozycji osadów wodnolodowcowych. Występują tu dwa kompleksy osadów, z których dolny był akumulowany w roztoce piaskodennej, a górny w roztoce o większej dynamice przepływów (ze znacznie większym udziałem żwirów) przed nasuwającym się czołem lądolodu.

This paper presents the sedimentological characteristics of outwash sediments occurring under a glacial till of a small thickness, in the south-eastern part of the Ciechanowska Upland, near the edge of the Narew Valley. The article presents description of the sequence of sedimentation structures visible in the Łubienica-Superunki quarry. There are two complexes of fluvioglacial sediments. The bottom part visible in the studied outcrops were accumulated in sand-bed braided river whilst the upper part of sediments developed in sandy-gravel braided river of a greater flow dynamics (near front of the warta ice sheet margin).

The petrographical features of the medium- and coarse-grained gravels (4-10 mm and 20-60 mm, respectively) of weathered and fresh (unweathered) deposits indicate, in combination with so-called indicator and statistical erratics, that two glacial lobes joined in the borderland of the Polish Lowlands and Uplands. Lower Palaeozoic limestones become less frequent in the finer gravel fraction, whereas crystalline rocks and flints become more frequent. The petrographical analysis of the coarser gravel fraction indicates that the ice sheet advanced from the NE to NNW (the Widawka lobe) and from the NE to ENE (the Rawka, Pilica and Luciąża lobes). The source areas of the gravel deposited by the Warthian ice sheet were magmatic and sedimentary areas of both the Baltic and the SE Sweden basins.

The fluvioglacial deposits of the Odra lobe, laid down during the Pomeranian phase of the last glaciation in northeastern Germany and northwestern Poland, have been analysed petrographically and interpreted in a regional perspective. The deposits have been classified in terms of the percentage of 10 selected petrographical groups and 5 petrographical coefficients. Statistical analysis of their values has shown significant petrographic differences that relate to the morphological characteristics of the study area. The greatest petrographic diversity was observed between Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania and the Odra lobe as well as between the Odra lobe and middle Pomerania. The differentiating features are: crystalline rocks, grey Palaeozoic limestones and flints and all of the petrographical coefficients. The differences within the Odra lobe itself are small by comparison with those in the neighbouring regions. They are the most evident between Uckermark and theMyśliborskie Lakeland. The differentiating features are: flints and quartz as well as a maximumof four out of five petrographical coefficients.
