Flows through channels and tubes with step-changing cross-section, including a channel with built-in orifice, were analysed based on the literature survey. The compiled material allowed us to observe some regularities, ;howed difficulties occurring during their analysis and made it possible to prepare our own research programme. Many authors refer to such axially symmetrical constrictions as an orifice. Experimental and numerical researches of steady and pulsating flows were studied. Some papers discussed non-symmetric changes of a channel cross-section. Papers which discussed experimental (mainly visualisation) and numerical examinations of flow through a pipe with a sudden axially symmetrical expansion refer mainly to a fixed diameter ratio. Papers do not evaluate the influence of the degree of sudden change in pipe cross-section on the flow structure in the vicinity of such a constriction. Literature is also lacking for analyses concerning the flow through sudden axially symmetrical channel constrictions. It is therefore necessary to evaluate the influence of the degree of diameter ratio change in channel expansions and constrictions on the flow structure and intensity of processes (length of recirculation zones, vortex structures, Coriolis ratio, energy losses and contraction phenomenon in case of a sudden constriction) downstream such a hydraulic resistance.
