Development of phosphorus removal technologies from municipal wastewater has been presented in this paper. This led to application of present methods such as: enhanced biological phosphorus removal and chemical precipitation. Trends and directions of scientific activities conducted by numerous research centres were presented. Selected proposal of non-conventional phosphorus removal technologies has been briefly described and their advantages together with disadvantages were listed. The psaper presents the evolution of the attitude towards phosphorus removal and its influence on wastewater treatment.
