The UBE (Unit Bed Element) approach allows amore in-depth treatment of the behavior of deep-bed filters. The paper describes the application of the UBE approach to VDR (Variable Declining Rate) filters. This entails combining UBE models of the filters with a hydraulic model of the VDR plant. A computer program has been written to enable implementation of the model. Two main features of the model are that it takes account of both the non-homogeneity of the suspension and the stratification of the grain. Results obtained with the program are presented.
