An analysis of basic parameters of Ro-Pax ferries in the Baltic Sea as guidelines for its preliminary design

This paper presents results of an analysis of the operating and maneuvering parameters (length, width, draft, main propulsion power and maneuvering equipment, and windage area) of the Ro-Pax ferries over 150m in length. The analysis takes into accounts all ferries operating in the Baltic Sea in 2017. The work also includes route analysis of the collected Ro-Pax units. The influence of port infrastructure is also discussed. The mean optimal Baltic Sea Ro-Pax ferry and its parameters for short term and long term forecasts are presented. This paper may be used as a primary guideline for the determining the optimal Ro-Pax ferry dimensions size for the Baltic lines in terms of preliminary ship design.

Żegluga promowa spełnia szereg funkcji gospodarczych. Wzrost pasażerskiego ruchu promowego na danym połączeniu wpływa na rozwój miast i regionów, kreując zapotrzebowanie na usługi świadczone na rzecz pasażerów przybywających promami. Z drugiej strony, miasto aby przyciągnąć potencjalnych turystów, musi wspierać rozwój infrastruktury miejskiej oraz dbać o wysoki standard obsługi turystycznej. Wzrost przewozów pasażerskich na linii promowej Gdynia-Karlskrona jest typowym przykładem pozytywnego wpływu na rozwój miasta.

Ferry shipping accomplishes some economic functions. Increasing ferry traffic on ferry service has positive impact on development of cities and regions. It creates demand for services rendered for ferry passengers. In the other hand, to attract tourists city has to support the development of infrastructure. It also has to care about high level of services. The increase of passengers turnover on Gdynia-Karlskrona link has positive impact on development of City of Gdynia.

One of the EU instruments aiming at the integration of the sea shipping in sea-land chains and in transport corirdors, is creation of motorways of the sea. The idea of creation of motorways of he sea was presented in the White Book of transport policy of the EU in 2001 as one of the initiatives aiming at enhancement of the European transport system. According to the assumptions,the motorwayof the sea connection would be a real alternative for connections road. The article presents economic and non-economic conditioning as well as the concept of the motorways ot the sea. It also presents prior EU initiatives in terms of motorways of the sea.
