The subject of the paper is analysis of forms and scope of spatial separation of selected residential buildings, using as the example the WSM housing development in the district of Żoliborz in Warsaw (1925-1949) and the Domaniewska II housing development (1974 - 1976) in Warsaw. There is a visible connection between the character of social diversity and division and shape of living space of a given community. Due to greater concentration of population in cities, both social diversity and its spatial features are subject to intensification. The spatial divisions between social groups in cities are manifested in several ways. In the further part of the paper I will deal with a specific type of spatial segregation, that is, residential buildings separated from the surrounding area. This phenomenon has been observed on a large scale in Poland after the freeing of the real estate market from the influence of the planned state economy. Companies investing in construction of apartment buildings in market economy conditions are trying to make maximum profit with minimum expenditures, that is, they offer apartments that are to suit the preferences of the buyers as much as possible. The analyzed buildings were selected for analysis due to the fact that they serve as an example of spatial separation applied on a relatively large scale. It is a procedure of appropriation of space applied by numerous members of the middle class, whose earnings do not enable them to separate themselves more rigorously from the poorer community by, for instance, purchasing a detached house or an apartment in a luxury housing development. Of course, in Warsaw, as well as in other cities, there are some highly exclusive housing developments, mentioned above. However, I selected the less radical example in order to show how common is the aspiration to introduce and maintain the division between "us" and "them".
