Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na potrzebę łączenia nauk społecznych z innymi dziedzinami naukowymi, takimi jak socjobiologia oraz psychologia ewolucyjna. To właśnie poprzez nie, naukowcy starają się wyjaśnić podobieństwa i różnice w zachowaniach ludzi i zwierząt. Im lepiej bowiem człowiek zrozumie, jakim jest zwierzęciem, tym skuteczniej będzie mógł dążyć do obranego przez siebie kierunku.

The aim of this article is to draw attention, that there is a need to combine social sciences with other scientific fields, such as sociobiology and evolutionary psychology. Through them, scientists try to explain the similarities and differences in the behavior of people and animals. The better man understands what an animal is, the more effectively he will be able to pursue his chosen direction in life.

Podejmując próbę charakterystyki zjawiska, jakim jest genius loci w kontekście sztuki kształtowania ogrodów, należy odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czym tak naprawdę jest owe zjawisko. Istotny jest nie tylko mistyczny, ale również czysto ludzki aspekt genius loci, przejawiający się w preferencji określonego miejsca i uznaniu go za atrakcyjne bądź nie. Być może kluczem do rozwiązania tajemnicy "ducha miejsca" jesteśmy my sami, determinowani wyborami naszych przodków. Śledząc dzieje sztuki kształtowania ogrodów, a co za tym idzie, dziejów samego genius loci, napotykamy jego wizerunek jako jawnej manifestacji sił boskich, lustrzanego odbicia ludzkiej pychy i ambicji. Niniejsza rozprawa jest nie tylko próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, czym jest i czym było genius loci w kształtowaniu ogrodów, jest także charakterystyką rodzaju ludzkiego, który - kreując w swojej wyobraźni obrazy ogrodu idealnego - wyrażał tym samym odwieczną tęsknotę za bliskim kontaktem z naturą.

The attempt to characterize the genius loci phenomenon in the context of the art of garden shaping needs answering one question: what does this phenomenon really stand for? What matters is not only the mistic, but also the purely human aspect of genius loci which shows in the preference of a specific place and perceiving it as attractive or not. Maybe we are the key to solve the mystery of the "place spirit", determined by the choices of our ancestors. Looking at the garden history, and, what follows, the very genius loci we encounter its image as a visible manifestation of divine forces, the mirror reflection of the human greed and ambition. This dissertation is not only an attempt to answer the question of what genius loci is and was in the garden shaping, but it is also a description of the humankind and man's creation of the image of an ideal garden, which permanently reflected the human sentiment and missing of a close touch with nature.
