The paper presents results of tribological tests of ethoxylated sorbitan esters water solutions, which were applied as lubricants. The influence of the type of compounds and concentrations on the friction coefficient, wear and temperature were investigated. The tests were performed on the four ball machine. Test duration was 900s, applied load: 2kN, rotating speed: 200rpm. 1%, 4%, 10%, 30% and 50% ethoxylated sorbitan monolaurate, ethoxylated sorbitan monostearate and ethoxylated sorbitan monooleate water solutions were applied as lubricants. It was concluded that 1%, 30% and 50% water solutions have best ability to reduce motion resistance and to lower temperature. On the other hand, along with increasing of the concentration of ethoxylated sorbitan esters water solutions, better antiwear properties were observed.

Influence of compound's type and concentration of ethoxylated sorbitan ester (ESE) water solutions on their anti-seizure properties was investigated. Ethoxylated sorbitan monolaurate (ESML), ethoxylated sorbitan monostearate (ESMS) and ethoxylated sorbitan monooleate (ESMO) were used as lubricant additives. Tribological tests were performed on the four-ball machine, at linearly increasing load (409N/s) (tribosystem: steel-steel). Basing on the scuffing load (the load at the moment of rapid increment of friction torque) anti-seizure properties of the solutions were assessed. The other measured parameter was the seizure load, that is load at the moment when friction torque exceeded 10Nm. The limiting pressure of seizure was evaluated according to the formula: poz=0,52*Poz/d2 where Poz - seizure load, d - wear scar diameter. According to the results obtained one can say that addition of ESE to water significantly improves its anti-seizure properties. The measured tribological quantities strongly depend on concentration. 0.001%; 0.005%; 0.01%; 0.05%; 0.1%; 0.5% and 1% aqueous solutions were tested. The best anti-seizure properties were observed for ethoxylated sorbitan monostearate and monooleate. The results obtained can be interpreted as a consequence of a formed liquid crystalline structure near the surface. The presence of mesophases in water solutions of ethoxylated sorbitan esters was confirmed by observations in polarized light and characteristic changes of the viscosity.
