Sacred space as one of the city-forming factors on the example of Łódź

The paper presents the analysis of the sacred space formation in Łódź at the beginning of the industrial era and addresses four main religions which are Catholicism, Judaism, Protestantism, and Orthodoxy. The comparison of selected temples is included and the difference between the function of the sacred space in the past and today is presented.

Artykuł przedstawia proces kształtowania się przestrzeni sakralnej Łodzi w początkach rozwoju ery przemysłowej. Analizie poddano świątynie czterech wyznań religijnych, które znajdowały się w Łodzi, tj. katolicyzmu, judaizmu, protestantyzmu i prawosławia. Obiekty zostały zbadane pod kątem funkcji miastotwórczej w początkach ich istnienia, jak również obecnie.

In this study three stages of the changes have been discussed, i.e. I. elitist, II. elitist--egalitarian, III. egalitarian. The characteristics of the changes have been demonstrated by means of gross schooling rates at secondary and higher education levels in chosen countries. The directions of future changes in the educational environment of business entities have also been indicated.
