This study deals with the presence of Mytilus galloprovincialis on the Mediterranean green crab, Carcinus aestuarii Nardo, 1847 as an epibiont. Crab samples were collected by means of single-entry fyke nets at 6 different locations selected in the Çardak Lagoon. A total of 22 specimens of M. galloprovincialis (1-9 ind. per crab) on different body parts of 4 crabs were recorded. This is the first report about the occurrence of M. galloprovincialis on C. aestuarii.

The occurrence of epizoic filter-feeding Protozoa (Vorticella and Zoothamnium) and parasitic Protozoa (Ellobiopsis) on Calanoida was noticed in the Gulf of Gdańsk in 1998, 1999 and 2006. The relatively high (4-16% of all calanoids) level of infestation varied depending on the type of infestation (0.1-13% of the population of particular taxa). The dominant copepods – Acartia spp., Temora longicornis and Centropages hamatus - were attacked the most frequently (from 10.5% to 54% of all infested calanoids). Epibiosis and parasitism were observed on all copepod developmental stages (adults, juveniles and nauplii). Epibionts and parasites were located on different parts of the body, but mainly on the prosome. Infestation by epibionts and parasites was not restricted to calanoid copepods: it was also detected in non-negligible numbers on other crustaceans, namely, Harpacticoida, Cladocera (Bosmina sp.) and Cirripedia larvae (nauplii) in the Gulf of Gdańsk.

Lower Cretaceous deposits of the Puez section in the Dolomites (northern Italy) yielded a rich ammonoid fauna (28 genera, n = 424) showing unique epifaunal encrustations by the ahermatypic solitary scleractinian ?Cycloseris LAMARCK, 1801. The coral encrusted only the outer shell surfaces of the ammonoids; the inner surface remained unaffected. Such a Cretaceous community and the relationship between the two fossil groups are described for the first time. The shells of dead ammonoids sank to the sea bottom and became colonized by the coral larvae, as documented by the location of the epibionts on only one side of the shells. The coral was fixed to the ammonoid shell for its entire life. Only the "sediment free" upper side of the ammonoid shells could be inhabited by epibionts such as corals and serpulids. The encrustation of ammonoid shells by the bivalve Placunopsis represents a different situation in that both sides of the ammonoid shells were affected, pointing to encrustation of floating ammonoids. This long-term infestation in the water column contrasts with coral settlement on the sea-floor. Ammonoid specimens encrusted by Placunopsis never exhibit encrustation by corals. The ammonoid-coral relationship from the Dolomites is documented from the Valanginian to Aptian interval. Examples of coral epibionts on ammonoids and other fossil groups throughout the geological column are briefly reviewed.

Parasites of the genus Ellobiopsis and epibiontic ciliates of the genus Paracineta were found on the body surface of some copepod taxa collected in the Kongsfjorden area (west Spitsbergen, Svalbard) during summer 2002. Paracineta sp. individuals were noted in Metridia longa and Paraeuchaeta norvegica (0.5% of the population infected in each species). This study provides the first record of the presence of Paracineta sp. in the latter species. Remarkably, epibionts were attached exclusively to females. Calanus finmarchicus and C. glacialis were invaded by Ellobiopsis spp., but the level of infection was generally low (0.06% and 0.09% of the population infected, respectively). Parasite distribution within both host populations was similar - 80% of infected specimens were at copepodid stage V. This study also provides the first record of C. glacialis serving as a host to Ellobiopsis.
