The paper describes the fundamentals of designing cycloidal gears and their use in planetary gear boxes (transmissions), showing the differences between them as well as their limitations. The characteristics and principles of shaping a particular gearing and, consequently, a gear set are indicated. A comparison of both gearing types in terms of intertooth forces and thrust generated by the system, and also power loss observed in the gearing is made. Verification of the gearing types was made on the basis of the designed gear sets used in the gear boxes with identical gear ratios.
