The paper presents the description of the direct and indirect environmental protection instruments applied in Poland. The advantages and the disadvantages of them were also described. Moreover the attention was paid to the role of new economic instrument: payments and penalties regulated by the power law, emissions trading implemented in the period of 2005-2006: recyding payments as a sources of receipts of the NFOŚiGW in the period of 2006-2010. The changes in functioning and the role of economic instruments in ecological policy were also indicated.
