A forgotten theoretical papers of Władystaw Natanson from 1911 of the energy distribution of photons enclosed in a cavity in the state of thermodynamic equilibrium is recalled and critically assessed. In his papers the fundamental role of the indistinguishability principle of photons had been formulated for the first time twelve years before the famous articles of Bose and Einstein were published.
