Comprehensive testing of diesel engines currently requires not only a control system for the feeding system of the engine, but also a system ensuring precise control of its load and providing constant measurement conditions. Additionally, it is necessary during the tests to record a considerable number of operating parameters of both the engine and the loading system. The currently available stands for diesel engine tests, the so-called “engine test beds”, are standardly-equipped with special systems controlled using computer applications to ensure the maintenance of the assumed engine operation parameters. For compression-ignition engines, this most often takes place by control of the accelerator pedal position. In this solution, the engine is controlled by the engine controller, which controls the fuel charge based on the measurement of the rotational speed and the accelerator pedal position depending on the assumed control algorithm. The shortcoming of this solution is no possibility of controlling selected fuel feeding parameters, such as fuel pressure or the injection advance angle. This paper presents preliminary tests on an integrated control system for both engine load and the parameters of fuel fed to a compression-ignition engine. The developed control system enables engine test bed control, which, depending on the measurement variant, ensures the maintenance of a constant rotational speed or a constant engine load as well as control of the Common Rail system actuators.

Prawidłowe prowadzenie badań silników spalinowych wymaga zapewnienia i utrzymywania stałych zadanych wartości obciążeń. W przypadku badań laboratoryjnych najlepszym rozwiązaniem jest wykorzystanie hamowni silnikowych. Współcześnie stosowane rozwiązania hamowni dzięki użyciu sterowanych mikroprocesorowo układów zapewniają automatyczne precyzyjne sterowanie i kontrolę poszczególnych parametrów hamulca. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono zbudowany w oparciu o środowisko programistyczne LabView układ umożliwiający zintegrowanie układu sterowania hamownią silnikową z układem sterowania zasilaniem silnika.

Proper performance of combustion engine tests requires ensuring and maintaining fixed set load values. For laboratory tests, the best solution is the use of engine test beds. Currently applied test bed solutions ensure automatic precise control and monitoring of individual brake parameters due to the use of microprocessor controlled systems. This article presents a system built on the basis of the LabVIEW programming environment enabling the integration of the engine test bed control system with the engine fuel feed control system.

The experiments described in the article aimed at adjusting the engine test bed, its equipment and software to perform comprehensive tests on a dual-fuel spontaneous combustion engine with the main gas dose (methane or biogas) and a liquid fuel ignition dose. The steps undertook during the tests included installing a new engine on the engine test bed, installing its equipment and preparing a dual-fuel feed system. The toxic emissions analysis system was also modified, thanks to which a thorough research based on current test methods was possible. All measurement devices were integrated and are governed by one system of data acquisition and controlling, which ensures repeatable testing conditions. In order to exercise better control over the oil pilot dose injection, the previously used engine was replaced with a Common Rail one, which facilitates better control over the pilot dose injection and ensures controlling the system through an external driver. Providing the engine with a set of measurement systems makes it possible to test it not only with reference to its power and toxic emissions into the atmosphere, but also to the heat absorbed by the cooling system, which enables testing engines for cogeneration units.
