The article deals with the issue of solar facades as the main external walls of a building, adapted to make use of solar energy. The aim of the article is to define the role of the facades and the factors that influence shaping thereof. The goal is of cognitive nature, whereas its implementation may contribute to strengthening the relationship between presumptions related to energy and architecture in the design of buildings. The need for the article results from the necessity to search for a possible balance between technical and humanistic spheres while shaping contemporary pro-ecological architecture, especially one aimed at receiving solar energy as a renewable energy source. In the article, both analytical and comparative methods are applied. The research was conducted on the example of four designs with solar facades of different characteristics, including two buildings planned by the author. The research results are observations that define relationship between the energy-related role of solar facades and urban, functional and aesthetic issues. These observations lead to the conclusion that the energy aspect, is not the only one to be considered while shaping solar facades in contemporary architecture. The solar facade combines both functional and artistic features.

The paper presents the concept of energy-saving architecture as a way to increase the use of renewable energy sources in the energy economy and increase the level of eco-innovation in Poland. Solutions leading to the minimisation of costs of energy supply and consumption in the internal building system are presented. The paper shows basic forms of building optimization and the possibility of their adjustment to the existing directives and regulations of the European Union using modem technologies. The reflections have been supported by examples of good practice in the field in Europe and worldwide.

U progu ery ekologicznej, w którą obecnie wchodzimy, w ramach realizacji koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju, istotne wydaje się przypomnienie ukształtowanych na przestrzeni tysiącleci zasad poszukiwania harmonijnych związków łączących środowisko zbudowane i środowisko przyrody. Architektura słoneczna, jakkolwiek przewijała się przez całe dzieje ludzkości, od drugiej połowy XX w. (ściślej od lat 70.) przeżywa renesans ze względu na nowe systemy wartości, jakie pojawiły się w kulturze oraz możliwości technologiczne w zakresie pozyskiwania energii słonecznej i rozwiązań materiałowo-konstrukcyjnych. Umiejętność korzystania z wzorów tej architektury, rozwijanych w różnych kulturach i epokach, czerpanie doświadczeń z lekcji historii w tej dziedzinie, może stanowić jeden z elementów działań na rzecz powrotu do realizacji idei jedności człowieka i przyrody. Celowi temu służy niniejsza publikacja, przypominając wielowiekowe osiągnięcia w kształtowaniu środowiska życia człowieka w powiązaniu z korzystaniem z naturalnego źródła energii, jakim jest energia słoneczna.

The realisation of a ecological model of life which would be based on the idea of sustainable development requires regard for the nature and the system of values to be built on a full respect to its laws. The renaissance an evolution of solar architecture took place during the past several years. The history of the concept of solar architecture, energy-saving solutions, technology and vernacular building tradition, shaping with full respect to the natural surrounding as well to biological processes, especially the solutions of the 1th generation in the epoch of the 20th century in the context of an idea of sustainable development constitute the subject matter of the research.
