The occurrence of Cu3(As,Sb)S4 minerals, i.e. the enargite and luzonite-famatinite series, is poorly known in the Neogene Baia Mare metallogenic district, NW Romania, with few records and no analytical data. This study provides the first EPMA and XRD data on enargite/luzonite from the Baia Mare metallogenic district, i.e. the Cisma ore deposit from the Băiuţ metallogenic field, and the Herja ore deposit. Vein-type ore bodies bearing Cu3(As,Sb)S4 minerals from Cisma are hosted by Paleocene-Eocene flysch successions, while the host rock of the enargite-bearing ore from Herja is unknown. The enargite and luzonite-famatinite series are known as “exotic” in low sulphidation epithermal ore deposits, “typical” in high sulphidation epithermal deposits in association with tennantite, and “sometimes common” in small amounts in intermediate sulphidation epithermal ore deposits. The occurrence of enargite/luzonite in the Baia Mare district suggests the need to update the metallogenic interpretation for several ore deposits, partly at the district scale in relation to other ore deposit/mineralogy features, e.g. vuggy silica, hypogene argillic alteration.

In previous study, the promising results of separating enargite from non-arsenic copper sulfides were obtained using selective surface oxidation in pure mineral systems. However, this technology was not well understood in real ores or concentrates. In this study, the flotation separation of enargite from complex copper concentrates by selective surface oxidation was investigated. The effects of regrinding, pulp pH, NaClO concentration, conditioning time and flotation time on separation of enargite from NECu minerals were studied. The mineralogical characteristics of the flotation feed and products were showed as an instructive tool to understand the separation results. According to the results of EDTA extraction, the possible mechanism for separation of enargite from NECu minerals is that enargite is more resistant to oxidized compared to NECu minerals. The following order for the oxidation of NECu minerals and enargite is obtained: chalcopyrite (chalcocite, digenite)> enargite (covellite).

The characterization of solid after alkaline leaching of enargite Cu3AsS4 is discussed. X-ray diffractometry for characterization of the physico-chemical transformations in bulk of source enargite concentrate resulted from alkaline leaching was used. The surface layers of the samples of enargite concentrate were investigated with XPS spectroscopy. The leaching of mechanically activated enargite concentrate with Na2S leads to total extraction of arsenic (the content of As in a solid after leaching is 0.06%) and then decomposition of enargite (Cu3AsS4) with formation of new phases of copper sulphide and jarosite. XPS spectroscopy measurements did not registered the occurrence of arsenic in any chemical form in the sample of solid taken from leaching system.

Przedyskutowano charakterystyczne cechy suchej pozostałości po alkalicznym ługowaniu enagritu Cu3AsS4. W celu charakteryzacji fizykochemicznych przemian w suchej pozostałości posłużono się dyfraktogramem rentgenowskim koncentratu enagritu otrzymanego z ługowania. Warstwy powierzchniowe próbek koncentratu enagritu badano przy pomocy spektroskopii XPS. Ługowanie mechanicznie aktywowanego enagritu z Na2S prowadzi do całkowitej ekstrakcji arsenu (zawartość As w suchej pozostałości po ługowaniu wynosi 0,06%), a następnie do dekompozycji enargitu Cu3AsS4 z utworzeniem nowych faz siarczku miedzi i jarosytu. Pomiary wykonane techniką spektroskopii XPS nie wykazały obecności arsenu w żadnej postaci w próbce otrzymanej po ługowaniu.
