Learning from the Abode of Chaos : institutions, stakeholders and contemporary challenges of conservation doctrine

The Abode of Chaos is a complex and atypical site located in Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d'Or, France. Dating back to the XVIIth century, the site, composed of vernacular buildings and the remains of a Protestant temple demolished following the Edict of Nantes, has been the subject of a creative process for the past twenty years aimed at transforming it into a sort of “mirror of the anthropocene”. Its owner, hierry Ehrmann, has been recording the often tragic events of our world in real time, through sculptures, installations, murals or injuries inflicted on existing buildings. For the past fifteen years, the site has been threatened with disappearance by the municipal authorities, who refuse to recognise its artistic or heritage character and oppose it to town planning regulations. However, the site is very popular with a wide and diverse public. The Abode of Chaos is therefore an interesting case to ask the following question : “Does current conservation theory strike the right balance between stakeholder rights and heritage rights“?

Abode of Chaos jest złożonym i nietypowym miejscem znajdującym się w Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d'Or we Francji. Pochodzące z XVII wieku miejsce, składające się z typowych budynków i pozostałości protestanckiej świątyni zburzonej po Edykcie z Nantes, od dwudziestu lat jest przedmiotem procesu twórczego, którego celem jest przekształcenie go w swoiste "lustro antropocenu". Jego właściciel, hierry Ehrmann, rejestruje często tragiczne wydarzenia naszego świata w czasie rzeczywistym, poprzez rzeźby, instalacje, murale lub uszkodzenia istniejących budynków. Od piętnastu lat miejsce to jest zagrożone zniknięciem z powodu władz miasta, które nie uznają jego artystycznego i zabytkowego charakteru oraz sprzeciwiają się przepisom urbanistycznym. Jednak miejsce to cieszy się dużą popularnością wśród szerokiej i zróżnicowanej publiczności. Abode of Chaos jest zatem interesującym przypadkiem, pozwala zadać pytanie: "Czy obecna teoria konserwatorska zachowuje właściwą równowagę między prawami interesariuszy a prawami do dziedzictwa"?

This article presents the strategic aspects of the Management by Values concept. The author tries to prove that implementation of this concept in an organization helps to form a stable and competitive organizational culture, which is accepted by the organization's members. MBV can be defined as a philosophy and practice of management, linking the basic values of the organization with its strategic objectives. It has been assumed that leadership has always been connected with human values. The role of the leader is to manage the organization consistently with its strategic objectives and basic values. This requires that a system of values be created, which members of the organization will adhere to in their work. By making the strategic vision "more human", the organization can not only survive but also ensure growth with the optimal financial result, using the personal involvement of its internal and external stakeholders.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie strategicznych aspektów koncepcji Management by Values. Autor stara się wykazać, iż wykorzystanie w przedsiębiorstwie tej koncepcji umożliwia kształtowanie stabilnej, konkurencyjnej i akceptowanej przez członków organizacji kultury organizacyjnej. MBV można określić jako filozofię i praktykę zarządzania, łączące podstawowe wartości organizacji z jej strategicznymi celami. Przyjmuje się tutaj, że przywództwo w swej istocie, zawsze było związane z wartościami człowieka. Zadaniem przywódcy jest w tym ujęciu kierowanie organizacją zgodnie z jej strategicznym celem i podstawowymi wartościami. Wymaga to stworzenia systemu wartości, którymi kierują się w swoich działaniach członkowie organizacji. ,,Humanizując” wizję strategiczną organizacja może nie tylko przetrwać, lecz także zapewnić sobie wzrost przy optymalnym wyniku finansowym, wykorzystując osobiste zaangażowanie wewnętrznych i zewnętrznych interesariuszy.
