On the base of literature data as well as on the author 's papers a review of the state-of-the art in material surface engineering using laser ablation processing is presented. A special emphasis is put on application of lasers with short and ultra-short pulses. The author's suggestions for definitions' scope and systematization of laser processing into qualitative groups are discussed. The point and capabilities for technological application of laser microprocessing of elements of internal combustion engines are shown. Selected results of the author's works devoted to ablative profiling of oil reservoirs in the upper zone of cylinder sleeves, laser removal of carbon deposits from piston heads and piston rings, cylinder sleeves, combustion chambers, and laser removal of oxides from internal combustion engine frames and heads are presented. An idea of modification and laser shock peening of selected enigine elements like frames, valves, and timing gear rollers is also presented. The selection results of investigation of technological superficial layer on the valve steel x45CrSi i9-3 (H9S2) formed by duplex technology: glow discharge nitriding and modification by impulse laser treatment on described. Performed experiments on chosen elements of combustion engines pistons, piston-rings, heads, bodies, valves, cylinder liners, crank-shafts confirmed the usefulness of proposed technology.
