Content available remote Efficient design of silicon slot waveguide optical modulator
EN
An optimal design of a slot waveguide is presented for realizing an ultrafast optical modulator based on a 220 nm silicon wafer technology. The recipe is to maximize the confinement and interaction between optical power supported by the waveguide and electric field applied through metallic electrodes. As height of waveguide is fixed at 220 nm, the waveguide and slot width are optimized to maximize the confinement factor of optical power. Moreover, metal electrodes tend to make the waveguide lossy, their optimal placement is calculated to reduce the optical loss and enhance the voltage per unit width in the slot. Performance of an optimally designed slot waveguide with metal electrodes as ultrafast modulator is also discussed.

We have successfully designed and demonstrated a co-planar waveguide (CPW) Mach-Zehnder (MZ) electro-optic (EO) modulator using a strip-loaded waveguide structure. The hybrid material, easily synthesized by sol-gel process, with a large EO coefficient of r33 = 50 pm/V and a long- -term stability at 80 °C for 200 hours is selected as the active layer. A simple and easily fabricated strip-loaded waveguide structure is designed for utilizing the EO material and reducing the coupling loss with optical fiber. The optimized design principles of the efficient transmission for such a modulator are discussed. The measured half-wave voltage V? of 8.5 V for the MZ modulator is gained at 1550 nm and shows a good agreement with the simulating result.

Content available remote Q-switched Nd-doped double-clad fiber laser
EN
A Q-switched operation of a 1064 nm Nd³⁺-doped cladding-pumped silica fiber laser using an electro-optic modulation has been presented. The laser developed worked at the repetition rate of up to 10 kHz. For a 5 m-long double-clad fiber, pulses with the energy of 0.36 mJ and the pulse duration of 84 ns have been obtained. For the same fiber of 3 m length, pulses of 154 µJ energy and 48 ns duration have been achieved.
