Renzo Piano twierdzi, że era rozlewających się miejskich peryferii już minęła. Dywany płasko rozciągających miejską tkankę tarasowych domostw ekspansywnie rozbudowujących infrastrukturę techniczną są zbyt kosztowne i wyniszczające, a system jako taki musi przejść do historii. Jedynie dogęszczające wysokościowce – miasta wertykalne wykorzystujące brownfields, czyli miejskie obszary niezabudowane, mogą sprostać potrzebie ekspansji budowlanej o charakterze "implozji", czyli dośrodkowego rozwoju miast. Rysuje się zatem tendencja rugowania zabudowy podmiejskiej, satelitarnej, nawet wiejskiej, na rzecz intensywnych skupisk miejskich i możliwie nieskażonej natury wokół. Gdzie zatem ulokować atawistyczną ludzką potrzebę "wiejskiej ciszy" – mieszkania pośród drzew, potrzeby stałego kontaktu z przyrodą, trwogi wysokości, w końcu umiłowania bezpiecznej skali "małych miast" zgodnej z tendencją ruchu citta slow. Z drugiej jednak strony coraz bardziej rysuje się niedostosowanie współczesnej populacji do samodzielności przetrwania i konfrontacji z nieograniczoną naturą. "Przygoda" nabrała wymiaru sportowego wyczynu, aktu bohaterstwa, śmiertelnego wyzwania.

Renzo Piano is of the opinion that the era of the sprawling urban peripheries is over. The vast flat areas of terraced houses stretching expansively the urban tissue and the technical infrastructure are too costly and crippling to the economy and the whole system has to pass into history. It is only the dense high-rise buildings – vertical cities making use of the so called brownfields that is the urban un-built up areas, that may satisfy the need for the construction boom that has the character of an "implosion" that is a centripetal development of cities. Thus, one observes a trend to eradicate suburban, satellite and even rural architecture in favor of intensive urban housing and the possibly uncontaminated nature around. Therefore where is the place for the atavistic human need for "rural peace" – for living among the trees and for permanent contact with nature and the fear of heights; and finally what about the love of the safe scale of "small cities" which is in accord with the tendency of the "citta slow" movement. Yet on the other hand, one notices an ever greater lack of adjustment of the contemporary population to being able to survive on one’s own and confront unbounded nature. "Nature" has acquired the dimension of a sports achievement, an act of heroism and a lethal challenge.
