Recent innovations in solar energy education and research towards sustainable energy development

The essential requirements of our everyday lives are fresh air, pure water, nourishing food, and clean energy in a most sustainable manner. The present review article concisely discusses recent innovations in solar energy education, research, and development toward providing clean and affordable energy and clean water to some extent. This article primarily addresses the Sustainable Development Goal 7 of the United Nations (SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy). Over the past few decades, many research activities have been carried out on solar energy conversion and utilization. The deployment of solar energy technologies has been witnessed to combat global warming and the betterment of the planet. Drivers and barriers to implementing solar energy systems from school to master's level through real-time deployments are discussed for further development and innovations. Mainly, expedited solar energy education and research are essential to improve solar energy utilization. The advancements in solar energy education and research towards sustainable energy development and circular economy are highlighted along with further directions required.

W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienia dotyczące relacji na styku nauka-edukacja- przemysł w aspekcie efektywnej współpracy dla uzyskania odpowiedniego poziomu synergii w rozwiązywaniu problemów energetyki, w szczególności samowystarczalności energetycznej i konieczności wdrażania innowacyjnych rozwiązań w tym obszarze. Odniesiono się do metod oceny prowadzenia badań naukowych w uczelniach i jednostkach badawczych, podkreślając konieczność większego docenienia i wspierania prac aplikacyjnych. Przedstawiono stan kadr naukowych z zakresu szeroko pojętej energetyki oraz problemy kształcenia kadr technicznych. Podkreślono konieczność wprowadzenia nowych zagadnień i form edukacji oraz prowadzenia ciągłego propagowania w społeczeństwie roli i znaczenia energetyki jako dziedziny gospodarki niezbędnej dla sprawnego funkcjonowania państwa, co wobec ograniczonych zasobów surowców energetycznych stanowi istotny problem.

The paper presents issues concerning the relations at the crossroad of research, education and industry in the aspect of effective cooperation to obtain the proper level of synergy for solving power engineering problems, especially energy self-sufficiency and requirements of applying innovative solutions in this area. Methods of assessment of research works in universities and research institutions have been discussed, underlining the necessity to provide greater appreciation and support of application research. Scientific staff availability in the area of broadly defined power engineering has been assessed and problems of engineers’ education have been described. The need for new directions and forms of education as well as for continuous promotion of the significance of power engineering as a branch of economy is essential for efficient operation of the country, which in view of limited energy resources is a major issue.
