Polish Navy officers, as other officers since the beginning of the 1950s, were students of studies and specialist courses at Russian military academies and since 1947 at Engel's Military Academy in Dresden. In the mid 1950s, 580 Polish officers, 20 navy officers including, graduated from the studies and specialist courses in the Soviet Union. Later this number varied and did not depend on the Polish side. The information on the studies and courses at the USSR military academies and universities was received 2-5 years in advance by the MoD Personnel Department that sent an appropriate „analysis of needs” to various braches commands. There the recruitment for studies and courses took place (basing on the applications of candidates or different superiors' suggestions). The studies (courses) at Russian military academies took 3 years and 10 months or 4 years, in East Germany, however, they lasted 4 years, 10 months of which were reserved for learning German. Specialist courses were either short or long term (from one month to a year). At the time 650 Polish Navy officers graduated from the studies and courses in the Soviet Union and German Democratic Republic. Since then they have been occupying high positions in the havy and their professionalism has been highly estimated by the superious and subordinates.
