Content available remote An improved Otsu method for oil spill detection from SAR images
EN
In recent years, oil spill accidents have become increasingly frequent due to the development of marine transportation and massive oil exploitation. At present, satellite remote sensing is the principal method used to monitor oil spills. Extracting the locations and extent of oil spill spots accurately in remote sensing images reaps significant benefits in terms of risk assessment and clean-up work. Nowadays the method of edge detection combined with threshold segmentation (EDCTS) to extract oil information is becoming increasingly popular. However, the current method has some limitations in terms of accurately extracting oil spills in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, where heterogeneous background noise exists. In this study, we propose an adaptive mechanism based on Otsu method, which applies region growing combined with both edge detection and threshold segmentation (RGEDOM) to extract oil spills. Remote sensing images from the Bohai Sea on June 11, 2011 and the Gulf of Dalian on July 17, 2010 are utilized to validate the accuracy of our algorithm and the reliability of extraction results. In addition, results according to EDCTS are used as a comparator to further explore validity. The comparison with results according to EDCTS using the same dataset demonstrates that the proposed self-adapting algorithm is more robust and boasts high-accuracy. The accuracy computing by the adaptive algorithm is significantly improved compared with EDCTS and threshold method.

Content available remote Adaptive edge detection method for images
EN
The novel two-dimensional (2D) wavelet with anisotropic property and application of it has been presented. Wavelet is constructed in the polar coordinate system to obtain anisotropic properties. A novel edge detection method has been developed with the aid of this wavelet. This method detects gradient jump and than follows along this jump. In this way the number of calculation for edge localization is reduced. Moreover, the presented method is able to detect all edges in an image in multi-scale together with its spatial orientation. Proposed wavelet as well as edge extraction method seems to be new way to edge detection for an image.

Content available remote Histogram Thresholding using Beam Theory and Ambiguity Measures
EN
This paper presents a novel histogram thresholding technique based on the beam theory of solid mechanics and the minimization of ambiguity in information. First, a beam theory based histogram modification process is carried out. This beam theory based process considers a distance measure in order to modify the shape of the histogram. The ambiguity in the overall information given by the modified histogram is then minimized to obtain the threshold value. The ambiguity minimization is carried out using the theories of fuzzy and rough sets, where a new definition of rough entropy is presented. The applications of the proposed scheme in performing object and edge extraction in images are reported and compared with those of a few existing classical and ambiguity minimization based schemes for thresholding. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of both qualitative and quantitative measures.
