During the XX Antarctic Expedition of the Polish Academy of Sciences III the summer 1995/1996 the air temperature was measured at 10 cm above ground level at 5 ecotops: moss (M), grass Deschampsia antarctica (D), lichens Usnea antarctica - Puchalski Hill (UP) and moraines of Ecology Glacier, and fresh moraines by Ecology Glacier. The maximal temperatures at 10 cm above ground level were by 2-3°C higher then at the standard height 200 cm above ground level, and the minimal temperatures were by about O,5°C lower. The highest maximal temperatures occurred above the grass Deschampsia antarctica (D) and above the lichens Usnea antarctica (UP), the lowest temperatures were measured above the wet mo ss (M) and near the glacier (ME). In the night the relations were similar. In spite of the dead ice in the ground and the nearness of the glacier the air temperature at the ME stand is close to the one at the other stands. So the thermal conditions means no barriers in the colonisation of these areas by vegetation. The pace of succession is delimited by periglacial processes and of climatological factors by strong winds and long lying snow cover.
