Business cycles in European regions

Purpose: The main purpose of the considerations is to present and analyze the most important morphological features of cyclical fluctuations for the 27 European Union countries as a whole (aggregated indicator – EU27) and for individual EU countries in the period from the first quarter of 2000 to the fourth quarter of 2022 based on the gross domestic product dynamics indicator. On the basis of the constructed indicators, which made it possible to isolate business cycle fluctuations, the degree of synchronization of the cycles of individual EU regions with the EU27 reference cycle was assessed. Design/methodology/approach: The methodological foundations of the research process and the empirical assessment of regional business cycles in the EU were preceded by theoretical analyzes regarding the concept, essence and morphological features of regional business cycle fluctuations. The study is based on 92 observations for each studied region. Dynamic indicators were built reflecting changes in general economic activity, i.e. quarterly time series of GDP. The obtained series were decomposed and deseasonalized. Upper and lower turning points were identified, resulting in phases of growth and slump in a given economy. This made it possible to present full business cycles and then assess them (in particular, determine the degree of synchronization between individual countries and the reference cycle). Findings: By assessing the course of fluctuations in business cycles of the entire economy of the European Union as a whole and fluctuations in business cycles of individual regions making up the EU in the period from the first quarter of 2000 to the fourth quarter of 2022, it can be concluded that this progression is not uniform. Divergences in business cycles in the European Union are an important feature of the data. This differentiation depends largely on the specific development of each region. Originality/value: The course of cyclical fluctuations was determined for all countries that are members of the European Union, as well as in individual EU regions.

Branża budowlana należy do obszarów o znacznych wahaniach koniunkturalnych. Jednak w ostatnim okresie zauważalny jest wzrost, który wymusza kształcenie sił roboczych na szczeblu szkolnictwa wyższego. Absolwenci-specjaliści powinni być przygotowani na zmieniające się uwarunkowania rynkowe, których treści znacznie wybiegają poza program kształcenia podstawowego. Dzięki podziałowi na studia licencjackie i magisterskie powstają nowe możliwości. Dla pracowników branży ze stażem zawodowym oznacza to dalsze kształcenie aby dorównać potrzebą i bieżącym absolwentom. Ustawiczne kształcenie w zawodach związanych z branżą budowlaną takich jak architekt, czy inżynier budownictwa jest warunkiem koniecznym do utrzymania się w zawodzie.

The construction industry is an area with significant economic fluctuations. However, in recent years there is a noticeable increase which requires the education of the labor force on the level of higher education. Graduates-specialists should be prepared for changing market conditions, of which the content is much greater than the one taught in primary and secondary school. Thanks to the division of studies into bachelor and master programs new possibilities have arisen. For industry workers with professional experience it means further education in order to meet market needs as well as equal the educational level of current graduates. Continual education in professions connected with the construction industry such as architect or civil engineer is a condition necessary to remain part of the profession.

Die Baubranche gehört zu einem konjunkturell stark schwankenden Bereich. Dennoch beobachtet man in den vergangenen Jahren ein starkes Wachstum. Das Wachstum fordert von der Hochschullandschaft neues Fachpersonal. Die neuen Akademiker sollen auf die sich stark verändernden Marktanforderungen vorbereitet sein. Die geforderte Spezialisierung können die Grundausbildungen nicht abbilden. Es entstehen dank der Teilung der akademischen Ausbildung in Bachelor und Master neue Möglichkeiten. Für die im Beruf etablierten Absolventen bedeutet dies ständige Weiterbildung, um nicht von den teils hervorragend ausgebildeten Jungakademikern überholt zu werden. Das lebenslange Lernen ist in Hauptberufen der Baubranche, den Architekten und den Bauingenieuren unerlässlich.

The aim of this article is to analyse and evaluate the role of innovation in the process of enterprise management in conditions of economic fluctuations on the example of selected manufacturing and trading enterprises. In this article, the theoretical aspects of innovation in enterprise management in conditions of economic fluctuations have been presented. The author described the research methodology and made a brief characterisation of the surveyed population. The author presented the results of the research on innovation in the process of managing the surveyed enterprises in times of economic fluctuations and undertook an attempt to evaluate their impact on competitiveness of the surveyed companies.

Celem artykułu jest analiza i ocena roli innowacji w procesie zarządzania przedsiębiorstwem w warunkach wahań koniunktury na przykładzie wybranych przedsiębiorstw produkcyjnych i handlowych. Zaprezentowano w nim teoretyczne aspekty innowacji w zarządzaniu przedsiębiorstwem w warunkach wahań koniunktury. Opisano metodykę badań i dokonano skrótowej charakterystyki badanej populacji. Przedstawiono wyniki badań, dotyczące innowacji stosowanych w procesie zarządzania badanymi przedsiębiorstwami w okresie wahań koniunktury i podjęto próbę oceny wpływu realizowanych innowacji na konkurencyjność badanych firm.
