Forecasts for generational background of consumer behavior in ecological and economic terms

Purpose: The basic purpose of the article was to determine the awareness of different generation groups in terms of ecological and economic aspects of life. Design/methodology/approach: The article presents the theoretical framework of consumer behavior and the implemented pro-ecological activities of representatives of Generations X, Y, Z. Subsequently, social involvement in pro-ecological activities in the immediate vicinity was determined based on own research and exemplary results of international research. Findings: The main hypothesis put forward is as follows: ecological and economic awareness is related to the age difference. The research indicates that there are differences in the consumer behavior of representatives of different generations in relation to environmental protection and the global energy crisis. Research limitations/implications: The research confirmed the formulated hypothes. The financial possibilities of various social groups may indicate a different image of consumerism in the era of commonly required pro-ecological behavior. Practical implications: The respondents showed great awareness and knowledge as well as commitment to pro-ecological activities, considering economic aspects. Social implications: Contemporary promotion of pro-ecological activities leads to an increase in social awareness. Originality/value: The analyzes of the conducted surveys emphasize the increasing awareness of pro-ecological and economic behavior of consumers in many countries and the need to adapt urban space to social and ecological requirements. Consumption leads primarily to an increase in production, which is an important factor of economic growth in the world markets.

Współczesne procesy rozwojowe można sprowadzić do trzech współzależnych kategorii. Są to przede wszystkim procesy związane z rozwojem nauki, techniki i technologii, które stwarzają zarówno nowe możliwości, jak i potencjalne nowe zagrożenia. Te nowe możliwości nie zawsze są jednak wykorzystywane w rozumny sposób, a potencjalne zagrożenia coraz częściej stają się zagrożeniami realnymi. Procesy rozwoju nauki, techniki i technologii dynamizują gospodarkę, co prowadzi do kolejnej, gospodarczej kategorii przemian, pojmowanych nadal najczęściej jako wzrost gospodarczy. Wzrost ten napotyka jednak granice, pozwalające się zidentyfikować. Wysoka dynamika wzrostu powodowana miedzy innymi przez rozwój nauki i techniki z jednej strony, a jej granice o charakterze fizycznym oraz instytucjonalnym z drugiej strony, określałyby z tego punktu widzenia charakter zachodzących przeobrażeń. Prowadzi to jednak do kolejnej kategorii zjawisk i procesów rozwojowych, a mianowicie do zjawisk i procesów kulturowych. Zarysowane tendencje rozwojowe przebiegają bowiem w obrębie pewnych tradycyjnych wzorców myślenia, działania i ładu społecznego. Pojawiające się coraz częściej bariery i granice tradycyjnie pojmowanego rozwoju sprawiają, że zaczynają się rodzić nowe wzorce kulturowe. W związku z tym mówi się od pewnego czasu o pewnego rodzaju "punkcie zwrotnym", poprzez który przechodzi cywilizacja zachodnia, jednak sposób pojmowania przełomu także ewoluuje w czasie.

The concept of sustainable development seems to be at the moment the only complete, alternative concept of development guarantying survival, being safe to natural environment and socially just. This concept is a synthesis of several initiatives adopted to change the growth model and to establish new order. Even though none of the aforementioned initiatives has been implemented they had various civilisation and cultural implications, most evident of them being globalisation and ecologisation of social, political and economic thinking. It means that the new models of social order may only appear as a result of new patterns of behaviour resulting from the new patterns of thinking. Potential sources of changes should be then sought in the mind of a modern man.

Modern development processes can be grouped into three interdependent categories. Theses are mostly the processes related to the development of science, engineering and technology, which create both new opportunities and new threats. Such new opportunities are, however, not always used in a rational way and new potential threats are more and more often becoming veal threats. Development processes in science, engineering and technology stimulate economy; this, in turn, leads to another economic category of changes often perceived as economic growth. Such growth, however, is restricted by identifiable limitations. Dynamic economic growth due to, inter alia, development of science and engineering, on the one hand, and limitations to said growth of physical and institutional character, on the other hand, would determine the nature of such changes.
