Lakes İznik and Manyas located in Türkiye are important biodiversity resources in the Palearctic region. No studies to date have explored the ecological statuses of these lakes together with their water quality based on biotic indices utilizing benthic macroinvertebrates. In this study, some parameters listed in the SWQMR of Türkiye were measured to determine the ecological quality of the lakes. Biotic indices included in the WFD and bacteriological parameters in terms of human health were also evaluated for these lakes. Sampling was performed at 6 stations in 2018-2019. Results for the zoobenthic community structure indicate that Lake İznik has started to become organically polluted and Lake Manyas is more polluted. Also, the biological index results for Lake İznik also show that the lake water quality has started to decrease and that pollution conditions have occurred, pointing to class III water quality. It is clear that there is pollution pressure in Lake İznik. However, according to the results, the macrozoobenthic community structure, diversity, and water quality of Lake İznik seem to be better than those of Lake Manyas. According to the results of the water qualities in the lakes, precautions should be taken to eliminate the negative pressures seen in both lakes.

Climate change, combined with rapid urbanization, can face many challenges in achieving urban ecological sustainability, especially in developing countries. Due to the lack of valuable data, measuring the negative impact of this urban environmental damage, particularly in African cities, is however difficult to investigate. In this context, this research proposes an efficient index, including environmental, societal, and topographic indicators, extracted from remote sensing data, to evaluate the spatial ecological vulnerability of Tangier city in Morocco. This composite index, called the Urban Ecological Quality Index (UEQI), was developed for 2002, 2013, and 2023 in the spring season, using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) as a multivariate statistical technique. Furthermore, the spatial autocorrelation analysis of the UEQI was performed to study the correlation between the index values and its surroundings, using Global Moran’s I and Local Moran’s I test statistics. The results show that on the one hand, zones located in the center of the city kept poor ecological quality in the three studied years, where the lack of green spaces and the high population density are the main reasons for this bad state. On the other hand, climate variability, such as precipitation change, directly affects the ecological quality of Tangier city. In fact, from 2002 to 2013, due to Morocco’s increased precipitation during this decade, the UEQI improved in 36%, unchanged in 50%, and degraded in 14% of the study area. However, from 2013 to 2023, with more than 52% degraded UEQI, the ecological quality of the city was affected by drought periods, which have been more frequent and intense in this decade, especially in green areas and agricultural land.

To implement the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) it is necessary to establish tools enabling ecological status quantification on the basis of biological indicators, and to assess reference conditions and relevant environmental pressures for the construction of response curves. This study focuses on the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea. A number of statistically significant linear correlations, linking chlorophyll-a concentrations with pressure parameters, were found. Due to the lack of historical data, reference conditions and ecological class boundaries for chlorophyll-a assessment were determined using a simplified mathematical approach.

The term "quality" has been more and more frequently used in various scientific studies. Its importance increases due to the fact that quality is one of the key criteria used by consumers when choosing a product. Understanding of the term "quality" is extremely broad. There are a number of quality categories identified. One of them which has been recently commonly mentioned is the ecological quality. It is especially well visible in reference to food. When buying food products, consumers not only pay attention to esthetical and organoleptic qualities of the product but to their ecological quality as well. The article presents the categories of products quality alongside with their characteristics taking into account the ecological quality of food and factors that influence it. The importance of food for human health and the environment of consumers as well as its impact on maintaining biodiversity have been underlined.
