Child-friendliness of urban space in the example of Łabędy

Children have long been a group whose needs and perspectives have been widely ignored in public spaces, despite several international legal documents and regulations proving their rights in the city. Based on those, child-friendliness criteria have been proposed and described. The established guidelines of: mobility and access, safety and security, attractiveness and comfort have been further explored through surveys conducted with minors. Subsequently, these criteria have been applied to the chosen district of Łabędy, to examine how they present in existing public spaces. The goal of the paper is to explore how child-friendliness criteria showcased in an average district and how average city development can create spaces and solutions that are friendly for children.

W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych wśród studentów kierunku Architektura, Politechniki Lubelskiej, ukazujące, jakie warunki musi spełniać przestrzeń, by stać się idealnym miejscem zabaw dla dzieci i młodszej młodzieży. Wnioski z nich płynące stawiają pod znakiem zapytania rozwiązania projektowe stosowane w powszechnie realizowanych w Polsce miejscach zabaw i rekreacji dla dzieci. To nie przestrzeń placu zabaw wspominana jest przez większość osób jako miejsce najlepszych zabaw z dzieciństwa. Nieograniczona wyobraźnia dzieci powoduje, iż każda przestrzeń publiczna może stać się miejscem zabawy. Nakłada to na projektanta obowiązek szerszego spojrzenia na możliwości wykorzystania przestrzeni publicznej przez najmłodszych jej użytkowników.

The first part of the paper presents the results of surveys conducted among students of Architecture, Technical University of Lublin, showing which terms must meet the space to become the ideal playground for children and young adolescents. The conclusions call into question the design solutions used widely implemented in Poland places of entertainment and recreation for children. This is not a playground space is mentioned by most people as a place of great fun childhood. Unlimited imagination of children causes that every public space can become a place of fun. This imposes an obligation on the designer a broader look at the possibility of using the public space for the youngest users.

Wenecja, miasto-muzeum, zdominowane na pierwszy rzut oka przez turystów, nie wydaje się oferować dobrych warunków do życia swoim stałym mieszkańcom. Tymczasem turystyka jest jedynie nakładką na codzienne życie miasta, a jego układ, skala przestrzeni publicznych i konsekwentne decyzje funkcjonalne uznawane są za rozwiązania modelowe, dające się łatwo adaptować do innych warunków. Kwestie uniwersalności cech środowiska mieszkaniowego Wenecji, które ułatwiają mieszkańcom kontakty międzyludzkie, wspomagają wychowanie dzieci i wzmacniają poczucie identyfikacji ze swoim sąsiedztwem i swoim miastem, pięknie podkreślił Lewis Mumford w swym fundamentalnym dziele The City in History pisząc, iż: „zadane nam przez Wenecję lekcje wciąż nie zostały odrobione”.

Venice, a museum city seemingly dominated by tourists, does not seem to offer good living conditions to its permanent inhabitants. In fact, tourism is just a ‘cover-up’ for the city’s everyday life, whereas its layout, the scale of its public spaces and consistent functional decisions are regarded as model solutions, easily adaptable to different conditions. The questions of the universality of the features of Venetian housing environment – which make interpersonal contacts easier, support the raising of children and strengthen the feeling of identification with the neighbourhood and the city – were beautifully summed up by Lewis Mumford in his fundamental work The City in History: “the homework assigned by Venice has not been done yet”.
