Arab Muslim civilization is one of the most affected by intra-state conflicts in the contemporary world. Religious diversification is the basis of antagonisms especially on the line of Shia and Sunni relations. Internal dilemmas and fratricidal fights in Islam (fitna) are perceived as an exceptionally harmful phenomenon for all Muslim community. Moreover, confrontations between factions of one religious group also take place. These conflicts refer also to mutual relations with Christian communities. Such countries as Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia or Pakistan may serve as an example. However, the country of the highest occurrence of religious fights is Iraq. The thesis of this article is to state that the current crisis in Iraq does not result only from the Sunni and Shia coexistence on the territory of one country but is strongly correlated with the political situation, the US intervention in 2003 and international terrorist organizations’ activities. The conflict sides have a similar potential at their disposal, therefore the conflict may be extended. Moreover, none of the anti-government groups’ leaders is able to gain support of the whole society. The biggest threat for the security of the state is the Al Qaida’s activity in Mesopotamia dominated by the Sunni. There are internal and external culprits of the deepening chaos and lack of stabilization prospects. Consequently, the normalization of the situation in the country through creating a cooperation platform for the Sunni, Shia, Kurds and Christians will depend on efficient effort consolidation, the Iraqis themselves and international factors.
