Ecodesign is a concept followed by major players in the electrical and electronics sector for at least a decade, usually being part in the meantime of a broader sustainability strategy. However, the situation is different for small and medium sized enterprises: There are some encouraging business cases from SMEs, but ecodesign is far from being a concept well implemented in SMEs. In July 2005 the European Energy-using Products Directive has been adopted and published. With the expected implementing measures, clearly ecodesign will become a "must" for the electronics industry serving the EU market.

Hewlett-Packard jest firmą, która od lat jest zaangażowana w różnego rodzaju inicjatywy ekologiczne, których celem jest zmniejszenie wpływu jej produktów na środowisko naturalne. HP projektując swoje produkty od lat stara się je tworzyć z myślą o środowisku uwzględniając zasadę "Projektowanie dla Środowiska". Program ten stanowi podstawę optymalizacji standardów ekologicznych charakteryzujących produkty HP. Oprócz elementarnych zasad, jakimi są spełnienie wymagań prawnych i norm bezpieczeństwa, HP stawia sobie za cel projektowanie produktów pochłaniających mniej materiałów, energooszczędnych i łatwo poddających się recyklingowi przy jednoczesnym zachowaniu użytkowych funkcji produktu. Dlatego też nowe wymagania wynikające z prawa ochrony środowiska, które jest teraz wprowadzane lub będzie w najbliższej przyszłości wdrażane nie będzie dla firmy HP stanowiło żadnych problemów.

Hewlett-Packard is environmentally friendly company, which for many years pay the special attention for solutions in the area of environment. In 1992 the company has launched to its policy the program "Design for Environment". Basic of this program are covered significantly with basis incorporated in WEEE, RoHS and EuP directives, however the WEEE directive has enforced in 2005 (in a few countries) and the other directives - RoHS and EuP will enter into force in the foreseeable future. The "Design for Environment" program is a basis for the optimalization of ecological standards which characterizes HP's products. The environmental protection is strongly considered already on the design phase while HP analyses in details product lifecycle. The network of Product Stewards has been developed within this project. Its main task is the cooperation with designers, research and developments teams and users. This is the group in charge of continuous stimulation of improvement of HP's products and their affect for the environment. Team of Product Stewards together with the Environmental Business Management Organisation monitor the environmental law since many years in order to adjust HP's products to the law and market demands.

W artykule przedstawiona jest prosta i praktyczna metoda pomocna w ekoprojektowaniu. Jej zaletą jest możliwość szybkiego i skutecznego uwzględnienia złożonych aspektów ekologicznych w procesie projektowania produktu. W części wstępnej, motywacyjnej została ukazana, na podstawie przykładowych danych i wyników renomowanych badań środowiskowych, celowość wdrożenia eco-projektu. Następnie w odniesieniu do dyrektywy EuP zdefiniowano podstawowe, ale nierzadko różnie rozumiane pojęcia związane z proekologicznym projektowaniem. Część centralna przedstawia systematyczny i metodyczny przebieg eco-projektowania oraz techniki wspierania innowacyjnych rozwiązań na tym polu. Uwzględnione zostały również odpowiednie odniesienia do nowej dyrektywy EuP (2005/32/WE Parlamentu Europejskiego i Rady).

In the first part, this article describes the necessity of implementation of ecological aspects into product design. Using selected results of scientific research, problematic ecological areas are shown to demonstrate the need for eco-design. The following section defines basic, but very often misunderstood terminology. The central part introduces a systematic and methodic flow of eco-design and introduces some techniques to support innovative solutions. How KERP has (up to now) interpreted the new EU directive EuP and adapted their eco-design methods accordingly (to implement this directive) is also discussed.
