We describe a novel way of teaching theoretical physics to undergraduate students. Our method differs from traditional courses in many ways. This idea was tested in a successful semester-long course at the Jagiellonian University. The advantages of teaching students in a workshop-like course are outlined together with its scientific programme and students remarks.

The principles of using computers for physical experiments and measurement data processing, worked out in the Physical Laboratory I at the Department of Physics of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan on the basis of many-years experience of the Physics Teaching Division headed by the author, are presented. The benefits of the use of computers in educational experiments are illustrated by a few examples. The ways of avoiding certain educational difficulties related to the use of computer methods in educational experiments are discussed.

New high-school teaching programs, introducing basic concepts of quantum physics in several German lands, are described. Didactic value of Bohr's atom model is critically discussed. Other approaches to teaching basic quantum mechanics are proposed.

Why are people scared of physics? Who is to blame? People see physics as boring mathematical exercises and rules. Why cannot we present our fascination with Nature? Why physics is taught in school without fun and without adventure of discovery? How can we make people understand Nature? Home equipment can be used to explain fundamentals of physics. Simple experiments outside laboratories are very often closer to everyday life of pupils and students. Didactics of physics is a new branch of science and has to be explored. We have to find a new approach to teaching physics. The author's experience in TV science programs and physics shows is presented. What can physicists do together for better public understanding of physics?

W dniach 6-10 listopada 2000 r. w CERN-ie w Genenoble odbyta się konferencja pod nazwą "Physics on Stage" "Fizyka na Scenie" (por. notatkę w Kronice PF, zesz. 4/2000). Dotyczyła ona dwóch nieco odrębnych zagadnień. Pierwsze to popularyzacja, drugie - dydaktyka fizyki.

Results of experiments on diffraction of acoustic waves on a macroscopic structure are compared with expectations based on theoretical analysis carried out in Fraunhofer's approximation. It is shown that a beam of acoustic waves diffracts on the periodical two-dimensional structure. A mathematical model of experimental situation is created. Results are interesting because of their didactic value.

Modern cognitive psychology treats analogy inference as a fundamental component of human thinking and a basis for other cognitive methods. Using analogy in teaching physics is, however, rare. Most teachers use this method only occasionally because they do not appreciate the educative function of analogy or are not prepared to use it.

It is pointed out that the didactics of physics, structure and methodology of physics and physics itself are inseparable. A proposal is made about the new curriculum of general physics. Relationship between the language of didactics of physics, the language of physics as well as the language of mathematics and its metalanguage(s) is discussed. The arguments are given for the didactics of physics as a science.

Do wygłoszenia wykładów plenarnych, dających przegląd osiągnięć fizyki światowej i polskiego wkładu do niej, zaprosiliśmy wybitnych fizyków polskich. Gośćmi honorowymi Zjazdu byli czterej laureaci Nagrody Nobla: J. Georg Bednorz, Herbert A. Hauptman, Harold W. Kroto, Rudolf L. Mossbauer, a także prezes Europejskiego Towarzystwa Fizycznego Herwig Schopper, którzy poprzez swoje wykłady plenarne nadali naszemu Zjazdowi jeszcze większą rangę i znaczenie. Wszystkich wykładów plenarnych było siedemnaście. W Zjeździe uczestniczyli także przedstawiciele kilkunastu europejskich towarzystw fizycznych.
