The paper presents the results of investigations performed on a Fiat 1.3 MultiJet engine fueled with natural gas (CNG) and diesel oil. The primary aim was to determine the influence of a small additive of natural gas on the exhaust gas opacity under variable engine operating conditions. The tests were performed for the engine work points n–Mo (engine speed– torque) reproducing the NEDC cycle. The selection of the work points was carried out according to the criterion of greatest share in the NEDC homologation test, covering the entire engine field of work used in the realization of the test on a chassis dynamometer. In the tests, the authors applied different energy shares of natural gas in the range 15–35.6%. The smoke opacity was analyzed in the FSN and mass scales [mg/m3]. The results of the investigations may be used in the design of electronic controllers for natural gas engines and in the adaptation engines to CNG fueling.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań silnika Fiat 1.3 MultiJet zasilanego dwupaliwowo – gazem ziemnym CNG i olejem napędowym. Podstawowym celem badań było określenie wpływu niewielkiego dodatku gazu ziemnego na zadymienie spalin w zmiennych warunkach pracy silnika. Badania przeprowadzono w punktach pracy silnika n–Mo (prędkość obrotowa – moment obrotowy) odwzorowujących test jezdny NEDC. Doboru punktów pomiarowych dokonano według kryterium największego udziału w teście homologacyjnym NEDC, obejmujących całe pole pracy silnika wykorzystywane przy realizacji testu wykonywanego na hamowni podwoziowej. W badaniach stosowano różne udziały energetyczne gazu w zakresie 15–35,6%. Analizowano zadymienie spalin w skali FSN i masowej [mg/m 3]. Wyniki badań mogą być wykorzystane przy budowie elektronicznych sterowników silników gazowych i adaptacjach silnika do zasilania CNG.

In the paper are presented comparative tests of combustion of gasoline and combustion of methanol in spark ignition engine of the Fiat 1100 MPI type. The engine was equipped with a prototype suction manifold with duplex injectors on each cylinder. Implemented system enabled dual fuel operation of the engine with any fraction of the alcohol. Engine performance and start-up capabilities were the same like in case of the operation on gasoline only. Type and parameters of the fuel supply can be changed in any time during operation of the engine. The study dealt with comparison of a selected parameters used to assessment of combustion of the fuels: pressure of the working medium p, rate of pressure rise dp/d􀁄, heat release rate dQ/d􀁄, temperature of the working medium, and combustion angle. The investigations pointed at considerable differences in run of combustion of the gasoline and combustion of the methanol, as autonomous fuels. Moreover, addition of methanol to gasoline results in considerable differences in combustion process, comparing to combustion of gasoline mixtures. The combustion goes on more dynamically, especially during initial phase of the process, while total time of the combustion is shorter. Effects of these changes are: higher maximal pressures, faster rates of pressure growth and heat release. Extent of change of combustion parameters depends on methanol fraction in total dose of the fuel supplied to the engine. Addition of the methanol effects in growth of general efficiency of the engine, which increases together with growth of methanol fraction and engine load. Absolute growth of the efficiency amounted to 2-5%, while relative growth amounted to 6-16%. Such significant growth of the efficiency should lead to reduction of energy consumption during engine operation.

W pracy przedstawiono wpływ podziału i wielkości dawki inicjującej na wybrane parametry pracy silnika dwupaliwowego zasilanego CNG. Podstawowym celem pracy było wskazanie jak sposób podziału dawki inicjującej wpływa na przebieg procesu spalania, parametry ekonomiczne i ekologiczne silnika oraz określenie możliwości optymalnego doboru sterowania wtryskiem dawki oleju napędowego. Badania pokazały korzystny wpływ podziału dawki (na dwie i trzy pojedyncze dawki) na parametry silnika. Obserwowano wzrost sprawności ogólnej silnika, zmniejszenie stężenia NOx, ciśnień maksymalnych, szybkości narastania ciśnienia, szybkości wydzielania ciepła i temperatur czynnika. Wskazano na możliwości istotnej redukcji emisji NOx przez podział dawki i wydłużanie opóźnienia wtrysku dawek dodatkowych.

The paper shows the impact of division and quantity pilot dose on selected operation parameters dual fuel engine fuelled CNG. The primary objective of this study was identify why the means of pilot dose division affect on the combustion process, economic and environmental performance of the engine and determine feasibility of optimal control of diesel injection dose. Studies have shown a beneficial effect dose distribution (for two and three single dose) on the engine parameters. Observed increase the overall efficiency of the engine, reducing NOx concentration, maximum pressure, rate of pressure rise, the heat release rate and temperature of medium. Pointed to the possibility of a significant reduction of NOx emissions by splitting the dose and longer delay the injection of additional doses.

Content available remote Application of natural gas to compression ignition engines
EN
The paper presents general information on natural gas properties, reserves, production and distribution. Its proved reserves are estimated to have been ca. 6 trillion cubic feet. Main reserves are in Russia. Application of natural gas to automotive vehicles on the basis of literature review has been presented. European Union, US government and other countries have introduced directives for a natural gas application in the transportation sector. Because natural gas has a low cetane number, it cannot be directly applied to compression ignition engines. Such engines have to be adapted to dual fuelling. An assisted ignition with a pilot fuel quantity is necessary. Comparison of the spark ignition versus dual fuel engines, natural gas versus LPG and methane as well as choice of pilot ignition fuel have been discussed in the paper. Most of natural gas refueling stations is in Argentina. Progress in the field of dual-fuel natural gas engines has been presented. Application of natural gas as a fuel to internal combustion engines is useful regarding economy, emissions and worldwide energy strategy.
