W pracy przedstawiono charakterystykę obecnego stanu śródlądowego transportu wodnego w Polsce, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dróg wodnych, infrastruktury towarzyszącej i struktury przedmiotowej przewożonych ładunków. Wskazano na znaczące możliwości w rozwoju tej formy transportu, zwłaszcza na rzece Wisła i Odra. Określono główne czynniki ograniczające obecnie efektywne wykorzystanie żeglugi śródlądowej w przewozie towarów. Zaliczono do nich prócz uwarunkowań naturalnych również zaniedbania infrastrukturalne i inwestycyjne. Ponadto podano możliwe kierunki rozwoju tej formy transportu w kraju, zwracając jednocześnie uwagę na konieczność wykorzystania w tym względzie funduszy UE. Podkreślono również, że rozwój tej gałęzi transportu może przynieść Polsce szereg korzyści, w tym przyczynić się do minimalizacji nasilającego się ruchu samochodowego (w tym zwłaszcza ciężarowego).

The study presents the characteristics of the current state of inland waterway transport in Poland, with particular emphasis on waterways, associated infrastructure and the structure of present transported cargo.Pointed to the significant opportunities in the development of this form of transport, particularly on the Wisla and Odra river. Identifies the main factors limiting the current effective use of inland waterway transportation of goods. Includes to them apart natural conditions the neglect of infrastructure and investment. Moreover, there were given the possible directions of development of this form of transport in the country, while pointing the need to use the EU funds. It was also emphasized that the development ofthose branches of transport can bring Poland a number of benefits, including the help to minimize escalating car traffic (especially truck).

This article presents selected European and Polish hydrotechnical structures of waterways, their history, present state and the latest construction trends. Waterways were pushed to the back as a means of transport for industry when the rail and roads developed. Nowadays there are new possibilities arising for waterways as water tourism has become a very popular way of leisure. The key attraction for tourists on water is navigating through hydrotechnical structures, for example locks. Europe can proud itself on considerable achievement in this field. Numerous, unique and brilliant lock constructions still working are the “living” proof of the European technical thought.

Transport śródlądowy uznawany jest za bardzo ekonomiczny i bezpieczny rodzaj transportu. Może on stanowić znakomitą alternatywę dla innych rodzajów transportu (głównie drogowego i kolejowego). Jednak możliwość jego wykorzystania zależy przede wszystkim od stopnia rozwoju śródlądowych dróg wodnych oraz taboru pływającego w danym kraju. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie stanu śródlądowych dróg wodnych - długości oraz gęstości, a ponadto zmian we flocie śródlądowej w krajach europejskich. Analiza zmiennych została przeprowadzona głównie na podstawie danych Urzędu Statystycznego Unii Europejskiej (Eurostat).

Inland waterway transport is regarded as a very economical and safe type of transport. It is a very good alternative for some other types of transport (mainly road and railway). However the possibility of using this type of transport depends mainly on the degree of inland waterways development and inland fleet possessed by each country. In this connection the main aim of the article is to present the state of inland waterways (length and density) and also changes in the inland waterway fleet of European countries. The analysis of the above-mentioned variabIes was based on the Statistical Office of European Communities data.
