The objective of the study has been to evaluate the current state of household wastewater and sewage discharge facilities available in rural areas, with special attention paid to domestic wastewater treatment plants. Considerable differences have been determined in the access to water and sewage management infrastructure in individual provinces in total and within rural areas. In the countryside, especially where houses are scattered, domestic wastewater treatment plants seem to be a good solution. By being a form of lasting investment, they can generate ecological and economic benefits over a longer period of time. The analyses showed a constant growth in the number of domestic wastewater treatment facilities, coinciding with a decrease in the number of septic tanks.

W artykule przedstawiono stosowane ekologiczne rozwiązania gospodarki ściekowej na terenach, gdzie z różnych przyczyn nie została wybudowana sieć kanalizacji sanitarnej. Alternatywą dla zbiorników bezodpływowych są przydomowe oczyszczalnie ścieków. Rynek dostarcza wiele rozwiązań, które można zastosować w zależności od warunków gruntowo-wodnych oraz możliwości ekonomicznych. Opisano zasadę działania, jak również wady i zalety oczyszczalni z drenażem rozsączającym, z filtrem piaskowym, z filtrem gruntowo-roślinnym, ze złożem biologicznym, komorą osadu czynnego oraz systemy hybrydowe.

The article presents ecological solutions in wastewater management in rural areas with low sewage network system. As an alternative to septic tanks are used individual (domestic) wastewater treatment plants. There are many available propositions in the market for different soil and water conditions as well as costs of installations. The principles of WWTP operation were described. Also advantages and disadvantages of WWTPs based on drainage system, sand filter, constructed wetland, filter bed, sludge activated system and hybrid system were presented.
