It has been shown that machine tool thermal distortion can account for up to 70 per cent of the total machining error. As a result there has been a great deal of interest in techniques for minimising thermal errors influence on the accuracy of the workpiece. Usually the solutions based on the temperature measurement and neural networks are used for this purpose. However, due to the complexity of the thermal distortions' phenomenon, long time constant and the diversification of the machining cycles the mentioned solution is not fully satisfying. There is an urgent need for direct measurement of thermal distortions during operation of the machine tool. The paper presents the idea of simple direct measurement and displacement sensors that are used for monitoring of the NC lathe thermal distortions.
