High level solution S4 of the IMO E-navigation Strategy Implementation Plan provides integration and presentation of available information in graphical displays received via communication equipment. At the same time, the problem of the correct application of digital selective calling (DSC) operational procedures in navigation practice has existed since the introduction of the GMDSS and requires a solution. This problem may be resolved on the base of integration maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment. The article proposes approach for practical realization of this integration by implementing a SMART (specific, measurable, assignable, realistic, and timely) DSC interface within S4. Using this approach the practical realisation integration of AIS – DSC – Information display was implemented. It makes possible implementation of user-friendly human-machine interface (HMI) for navigator. An experimental prototype of communication graphical interface is designed, which allows effective decision-making on radio communication control/monitoring. The use IEC 61162-1/2 (Maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment – Digital interfaces) data transfer provides standard inter-module connections and eliminates the negative impact of the equipment diversity from different manufacturers by means uniform HMI implementation.

A general project for simplification of VHF DSC radiocommunication for navigators and for increasing DSC efficiency by integration of the DSC VHF radio equipment and the AIS – ECDIS vessel’s system is presented. Proposed measures are to contribute to further developments in maritime radiocommuni-cation systems, technology and progress of e-navigation strategy.

Zaprezentowano kierunki działań, które powinny być podjęte, aby system GMDSS był w pełni nowoczesny. Pozostawiając podstawowe wymagania funkcjonalne systemu, które stanowiły bazę jego utworzenia, opisano główne nowości weryfikacji podsystemów składowych, jak również włączenia nowych, rozszerzając w ten sposób zakres czynności funkcjonalnych i operacyjnych.

A systematic process is needed for continuous review of the GMDSS to ensure it remains modem and fully responsive to changes in requirements and evolutions of technology. The article presents some main topic concerning how to carry out a review of the GMDSS both of its functionality and its communication systems.

Przedstawiono procedury operacyjne przy realizacji alarmowania w niebezpieczeństwie za pomocą cyfrowego selektywnego wywołania. Omówiono również zagadnienia będące m.in. przedmiotem obrad Konferencji COMSAR w Londynie a związane z procedurami alarmowania w sytuacjach zagrożenia na morzu.

The paper presents a Distress Call procedure for the use of digital selective calling. Also some information concerning simplification of operational procedure in distress situation has been discussed.

In this paper a mathematical analysis of the Digital Selective Calling (DSC) system is presented with regard to the occurrence probability of different errors which can cause generation of false distress signals [5,6]. In particular, the kinds of sequences were considered which - in accordance with some ITU recommendations - should indicate "distress", "urgent" and "routine" messages. The DSC system serves within the GMDSS as the only way of sending alert signals by means of terrestial communication [3,4]. However during its use at sea DSC creates many serious problems aspcially those connected with the false alert signal generation [7]. Presently this problem is being carefully monitored and analyzed under auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

This paper contains recults of the research on Digital Selective Calling DSC) carried out in real conditions of sea voyages during the last year of GMDSS implementation. The results make it possible to estimate a degree of DSC system usefulness in achieving its assumed functions within GMDSS.
