Plastic is one of the main pollutant sources that are difficult to decompose and then carried into the ocean and fragmented into smaller parts (microplastics) due to UV radiation and water currents. Their small size means that microplastics are often ingested by aquatic organisms, such as fish. This research aimed to determine the presence, abundance, and types of microplastics in the digestive tract of four dominant fishes landed at Lengkong Fish Auction Point, Cilacap, Central Java, i.e. threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum), mackerel (Rastrelliger sp.), threadfin bream (Nemipterus japonicus), and hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus). We found microplastics in the digestive tract of four selected fishes with a frequency of occurrence of 100%. The concentration of microplastics in fish digestive tracts is relatively high, with a value range of 12 ±2.86 to 28.33 ±8.11 particles∙ind.-1. Microplastics were found in films, fibres, fragments, and granule shape types with various colours: brown, purple, blue, black, green, transparent, and yellow. The polymers found were polystyrene (PS), nylon, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyurethane (PU), polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The present study provides baseline data for microplastics contamination in commercial fish species landed at Lengkong Fish Auction Point, Cilacap, Central Java, Indonesia. The fact that we discovered PU, the most harmful polymer, piques our attention.

Marine fishery products have been contaminated with microplastic (MPs), including molluscs, crustacean, and fish. The study aimed to analyze the number and types of MPs in the digestive tract and sediment, correlation between number of MPs with total body length, and estimated uptake of MPs in the fish from sediment using Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF). The method of determining sampling point involved purposive sampling and direct observation at Pramuka Island, Seribu Islands, Indonesia. Groupers fish were found in 20 individuals with 4 species of Epinephelus areolatus, E. ongus, E. sexfasciatus, and E. fuscoguttatus. The number of MPs found in the gastrointestinal tract of Epinephelus is 1648 particles with 3 types: fiber, fragment, and pellet. The highest number of MPs in the sediment was at dock and the lowest was at Gosong Pramuka Island. The numbers of MPs in the digestion tract does not affect the body length of individual species. The BAF value indicates result that the MPs uptake in sediments to gastrointestinal tract of Epinephelus grouper is low. All samples of the Epinephelus grouper were contaminated with MPs.

lnfections of gastrointestinal system and food-borne diseases are a significant worldwide health problem. The gastroenterocolitis and diarrhea in human are commonly caused by enterotropic viruses, mainly rota- and adenoviruses, as well as enteropathogenic bacteria: Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae and Yersinia enterocolitica. The increase of food-borne diseases induced by consumption of food contaminated by Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli EHEC exotoxins, though rarer by Clostridium botulinum, is observed all over the world. The culture and serological methods as well as genetic techniques are used more often in diagnostic of diarrhea and infection of gastrointestinal system.

The effects of heavy metals mixture (Cu, Ni, Cr, Zn and Fe) of 1% and 10% concentrations were investigated on the bacteriocenoses structure, the abundance and functional activity of bacteria of the digestive tract of rainbow trout underyearlings. It was determined that heterotrophic bacteria predominated in the bacteriocenoses of the digestive trace of rainbow trout. Under the influence of the metal mixture the qualitative and quatitative composition of the bacteriocenoses in the digestive tract of the rainbow trout underwent a change. The results obtained indicated that after the exposure to I and 10% concentration of heavy metals mixture viable count of heterotrophic bacteria decreased from 1.5 to more than 6 limes compared to the control. Under the exposure to heavy metals mixture the percentage ratio of proteolytic bacteria in the digestive track of rainbow trout increased.
