The operating conditions of light rail vehicles (trams, metro vehicles) are predominantly different compared with those of passenger or freight trains. The increased number of low-radii curves has a negative effect on wheel–rail interaction. The general design of light rail vehicle running gear is inherited from passenger trains and adapted to different loads. However, conventional solutions of a running gear may not provide smooth low-radius curve negotiation in all circumstances. In addition, a two-point contact is likely to occur, which, in turn, leads to accelerated wear of not only the wheels’ tread but also their flanges. One of the proposals to deal with problems associated with the wheel–rail interaction in tight curves is implementing an automotive solution: a differential gear. The aim of the study is to investigate the dynamic behavior of a metro vehicle model equipped with differentials at each wheelset. The differentials were tested in two main variants: open and with internal friction torque. Internal friction torque value was set, consecutively, up to 2000 Nm. The results have shown that on tight curves a differential may improve rail vehicle wheel–rail interaction.

Mobile heavy machines as unsprung vehicles exhibit low dissipation ability, hence the ride even at low speeds may give rise to intensive vertical and angular vibration. Vibrations thus produced are mostly in the low-frequency range and hence energy dissipation in tires will reduce the vibration intensity in a minor degree only. Particularly dangerous situations occur when the road wheels break away from the road surface due to the ’galloping’ effect. Kinematic excitation acting on the wheels is mostly uncorrelated stochastic (random) processes, giving rise to the "snake meandering" effect. That implies a major restriction on the ride velocity, which negatively affects the machine performance. The motion of tired wheels will always involve certain slipping. While investigating the feasibility of increasing the efficiency of the vibration reduction systems, one ought to take into account the variable adhesion of road wheels due to different dynamic loading acting on the vehicle axles during the ride. This study investigates the motion of unsprung mobile machines, taking into account the dynamic processes in the driving system under the conditions of the variable adhesion of road wheels. The model of interaction between a tired wheel and the terrain takes into account the relationship between the road wheel adhesion factor and the slipping action, as well as the impacts of the differential gear on distribution of drive torque. The 3D (spatial) model of a backhoe loader is considered. It is a two-axle self-propelled machine on a wheeled chassis. The mathematical model constitutes nonlinear and non-stationary differential equations of motion. Their stability is therefore associated with vibration intensity. Simulations in the time domain were supported by Matlab-Simulink. The purpose of this study is to improve the safety features during the ride of mobile heavy machines, basing on the parametric optimization of the model.

Opracowano algorytm wnioskowania diagnostycznego w celu zaprogramowania jednostki centralnej komputera pokładowego ciągnika. Opracowano algorytm kontroli poślizgu kół napędowych dokonując estymacji parametru diagnostycznego wskazującego na nieodpowiedni tryb pracy mechanizmu różnicowego mostu napędowego kół tylnych ciągnika rolniczego.

Control of the limit wheel spin in two-wheel driven farm tractor is proposed. An algorithm for diagnostic conclusion has been developed so as to program the central processing unit of the tractor computer. The algorithm for wheel spin control has been developed by estimating the diagnostic parameter indicating improper operating mode of the differential gear of the farm tractor back wheel driving axle.

The paper presents a concept of introducing a control system for limit skid of drive wheels in a two-wheel drive tractor. The researchers developed a diagnostic inference algorithm to program central processing unit of the tractor on-board computer. The paper points out two stages of the drive wheel skid control procedure allowing to estimate a diagnostic parameter.

Tematyka publikacji odnosi się do zagadnień niekorzystnego wpływu mechanizmu różnicowego mostu napędowego na własności dynamiczne ciągnika. Analizowany jest stan pracy, w którym siła napędowa jednego z kół jezdnych zostaje ograniczona siłą przyczepności do podłoża, powodując zmianę poślizgu względnego kół napędowych a tym samym zmianę chwilowej prędkości agregatu ciągnikowego. Pulsacje prędkości roboczej ciągnika przekładają się na zmianę parametrów agrotechnicznych realizowanych zabiegów, szczególnie z udziałem takich maszyn jak rozsiewacze nawozowe lub opryskiwacze.

The subject matter of the publication relates to the problems of unfavorable effect of differential gear of the driving axle on the tractor's dynamic properties. The analysis covers the working condition, in which the driving force of one of the road wheels is restricted by the surface adhesive force, resulting in the change of relative slip of driving wheels and thereby change in the momentary speed of the tractor unit. Pulsations of the tractor working speed result in the change of the agrotechnical parameters of the performed operations, particularly with the participation of such machines like fertilizer distributors or spraying machines.

Measurement of ball motion in a new-type limited slip differential gear for automobiles is carried out, differential gear which is under development by Hitachi Metals, Ltd. based on a new principle with steel balls and races having an ad-hoc configured race pattern. One ball in the differential gear is magnetized and the direction of magnetic axis rotating with the ball is traced by Hall sensors assembled in orthogonal three axes around the ball. Output signals from the sensors are plotted in orthogonal projections to the three axes, offering a clear understanding of the ball motion. Expressions for calculating the angular velocity components of ball motion are deduced and the ball motion is numerically analyzed from the data obtained in the measurement. The results demonstrate complicated ball behaviors, which include important information on slip between the ball and the groove surfaces affecting the durability and life of the system.
