The paper shows real, industrial, engineering knowledge modeling in a small enterprise. The enterprise performs designing and manufacturing of the equipment as well as the complete customizable production lines according to customer needs. The specificity of the company is that practically every order can be produced in one single copy. Because of that the conceptual design is one of the most important design activities. The authors have developed software solutions which support the conceptual and detail design activities. The developed software concerns the whole process organization and different problem–oriented sub-activities.

The article presents the concept of a detailed design and explains why we need new mechanisms for the management of knowledge in detail designing. An overview of the available methods of design knowledge management is presented together with the review of new emerging trends, based on available literature. The last part describes a prototype application for use of design knowledge management.
