Social changes cause in contemporary reality such phenomena like relativism of rules, totalitarianism and globalisation. They obviously refers also to architecture. They transform the notion of architecture by moving its boundaries and extending its range to the infinite architectural space i.e. architectural universe. It can embrace all spatial forms, the natural ones and those built by man.

For analytic definitions, seeking for eternal principles, art is something past, closed in rigid systems. However not all works of art classified by art history, aesthetics or philosophy seemed to be art for us, in our life. It happens only then, when work of art becomes irreversible fact and experience - now and here revealing objective world and not private predilections or refinements. The author gives examples of contemporary works of art projected within the architectural frames as the synonym of unrepeatable reality, protected from any illusion.

An attempt has been made to show how essential values: durability, usefulness and beauty are helpful to explain or to define the bounds of architecture. The civilazation has influenced the conception of the Vitruvius's triad. A lot of opinions especially concerning the aesthetic form are subjective that makes it difficult to establish the exact definition of the bounds of architecture. Besides, the building materials, the way of using the building and its aesthetics are constantly changing. However, the objects deprived of these features can't be numbered among the architectural objects.

Searching limits of architecture apply to definitions of architecture it makes the main thesis of article. Multitude of definitions such objectives (rationally) as subjectives (intuitive) provides that limits of architecture are still widening. Allowed the author the problem concentrates on consciousness decision of using the rules of architecture and follow that way accept them or reject.

It doesn’t seem to be very hazardous to claim that architecture is the science and an art „on borderline". Following the idea of Jadwiga Sławińska one can say that architecture locates itself between two spheres of culture: the symbolical culture, and the culture of being. This peculiar condition can be the reason of multiplication of architectural definitions and impossibility of precise limits of architecture as an aesthetic figure and a kind of scientific theory as well.

The author presents some selected opinions by architects and students of architecture to prove significance of the definition of boundaries of contemporary architecture. Although the definition itself has not been univocal it should be accepted that it does not correspond to questions of form, function and structure of a building exclusively, but expresses the notion of architecture as a process, containing the whole environment built, to imply then certain social, psychological, economic, political, legal or ecological effects.
