The aim of the study was to analyse the contrary body movement in Viennese waltz performed by dancesport athletes and to determine its relationship on scores awarded by the adjudicators. Methods: Six high-level and six intermediate dance couples took part in the study. Each couple performed three identical series of three natural turns figure in the Viennese waltz. All of them were recorded on camera while performing to music. All the trials of each couple were evaluated by 6 international adjudicators as to the technical quality component from the Absolute Judging System. A device for measuring triaxial rotational angular velocities was mounted on the dorsal part of the pelvic girdle and on the back of the chest of each athlete. Results: An analysis of covariance revealed that the mean squares of the difference in angular rotation velocity of the pelvic girdle and thoracic spine of the tested dancers were strongly associated with scores given by the adjudicators (F1.9 = 11.5, p = 0.0240, np2 = 0.449) independently of the assignment to the given group. Conclusions: The analysis and comparison of top level and intermediate athletes showed that the suggested method of measurement, presentation and analysis of the profile motion of pelvic girdle and chest motion may become a good tool for a general evaluation of the movement technique as well as a quick and effective qualitative and quantitative biomechanical assessment of selected components of movement technique in dancesport.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to analyze the muscle force distribution and lower limb joint loading during two types of pirouettes and check which muscle in which pirouette generates the highest force and which joint is the most loaded. Methods: Skilled dancers (n = 16) performed single-turn pirouettes in jazz and classic styles. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected using the Vicon system and Kistler plates. The joint reaction forces and muscle forces were calculated using a musculoskeletal model in the AnyBody Modeling System. Results: No statistically significant differences were found for the duration of the turn in both pirouettes. The range of motion in all joints of supporting leg in sagittal plane and in hip joint in frontal plane for non-supporting leg were significantly higher in classic pirouette. The ankle joint was the most loaded joint in both pirouettes and its maximal value was significantly higher in classic pirouette. The force generated by ankle plantar flexors muscles was significantly greater in the jazz pirouette in turn phase. For the nonsupport limb, external hip rotators generated significantly greater force when performing the classic pirouette. Conclusions: It seems that early stage dancers may start their lessons with jazz pirouettes, where necessary joint mobility is lesser. They also are supposed to increase muscle strength and body awareness with such proceedings. A better awareness of the mechanical loads on the musculoskeletal system which a dancer performing pirouettes faces should have an impact on the way dance classes are conducted and choreographic elements are sequenced.

The study aimed to assess the formation of the spinal anteroposterior curvatures in people practicing ballroom dancing. Methods: The study group comprised 98 people practicing ballroom dancing (58 W, 40 M; aged 35–45 years). Digital inclinometer “Baseline” was used as primary research tool. The data were analyzed based on Student’s t-test, Mann–Whitney U-test and Pearson Chi-square test. Results: Statistically significant inter-gender differences were in the values of angles determining inclination of lumbosacral section of the spine ( p < 0.001), the lumbar lordosis curvature ( p < 0.001) as well as the compensation ratio ( p = 0.002). Statistically significant dependences between the types body posture and gender ( p = 0.005) were noted. Conclusions: Women practicing ballroom dancing are distinguished with increased inclination of lumbosacral section of the spine and deeper lumbar lordosis, while men are characterized with shallowed lumbar lordosis. Women are more likely to have lordotic body posture while men are characterized by balanced body posture. The prevalence of body posture subtypes is not dependent on gender.

The aim of this study is to assess the accuracy of repetition of dance movements and the possibilities of learning the dance arrangement by professional dancers and students of the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice (AWF) during an active video game. 13 professional dancers from the Rozrywka Theatre in Chorzów and 28 students of the AWF were examined. Accuracy of movement repetition and learning possibilities of the dance arrangement was assessed using the Kinect system cooperating with the Xbox 360 console and an interactive dance video game. The participants during the subsequent trials where learning dance moves demonstrated by a virtual teacher. The results of the tests showed that the quality of repetition of the arrangement depends both on the women’s dance experience and the number of repetitions performed. Professional dancers performed new movement acts much more accurately than students. Participants in subsequent attempts more accurately reflected the dance arrangements. This may indicate the possibility of effective learning of dance moves using an active video game.

Many jumps used in classical and modern ballet are the source of serious injuries. The pilot experiment that was carried out with two professional dancers measured the temporary character of ground reaction forces in a few ohosen elements of classical dance. The method of piezoelectric dynamometry as well as video recording was applied. The results of the experiment concerning the dynamie overloads, which are in this project defined by value of ground reaction forces allow to set the direction of the further research into the area of biomechanical interpretations.
