In the paper measurements of the critical agitator speed for dispersing disc agitators are presented. The experiments were carried out in a flat-bottomed vessel without baffles. A non-Newtonian liquid - solid system with different concentration were mixed. On the basis of experimental results the critical Reynolds number was determined.

In the paper investigation results dealing with the suspension preparation in a mixer with the disc agitator are presented. Critical conditions for suspending of solid particles in the liquid phase were determined. The influence of particle concentration on the power input was analysed. The results obtained were elaborated using the Froude number in a form of the dimensionless correlation describing the influence of process parameters on suspension, formation.

An effect of gas phase on conditions of the floating particle draw-down into liquid in an agitated vessel was experimentally studied. Measurements were carried out for high-speed impellers (propeller, Rushton turbine, up- or down-pumping pitched blade turbine) and different numbers of baffles in the agitated vessel. Critical agitator speeds necessary for the production of aerated suspension of floating particles were found.
