Cassia Saligna gum was isolated from cassia saligna seeds and subjected to chemical modification via cyanoethylation. The latter involved reaction of the gum with acrylonitrile under the catalytic action of sodium hydroxide. Variables studied include concentration of acrylonitrile, sodium hydroxide and reaction temperature. Cyanoethylation of cassia saligna converts it to water soluble product with good resist a storing fermentation. The rheological properties and the viscosity at various rates of shear were investigated. The results obtained indicate that cyanoethylated cassia saligna gum may used safely as thickeners in printing of cotton and polyester fabric in silk screen printing instead of sodium alginate used.
